University of Kentucky Student Life

University of Kentucky is on a 813-acre campus in an urban setting in Lexington, KY, not far from Cincinnati and Louisville. There are many activities and organizations for University of Kentucky students to participate in – band, chorus, theater groups, a campus newspaper, a radio station and more.

University of Kentucky also has fraternities and sororities.

University of Kentucky has a thriving Wildcat Service Dogs. In fact, more students participate in Wildcat Service Dogs than any other on-campus activity.

Other popular student organizations at University of Kentucky include Alpha Phi Omega, Pre-Medical Activities Council, Society of Women Engineers and Snowcats.

The University of Kentucky community comes together each year for Campus Ruckus hosted by Student Activities Board, Crunch Brunch hosted by Student Activities Board and DanceBlue 24-hour Dance Marathon hosted by DanceBlue.

Does University of Kentucky Offer Student Housing?

University of Kentucky offers housing. Students are not required to live on campus. First year students are given no special consideration for on-campus housing.

Most University of Kentucky students live off campus. In 2021, 29% of undergrads at University of Kentucky lived in some kind of on-campus housing and 71% of students lived off-campus or commuted to University of Kentucky. There are 6,757 spots available in on-campus housing for all 22,227 undergraduates. In the 2020-21 school year, 6,428 students chose to live in campus housing. First year students are allowed to park a car on campus.

University of Kentucky offers coed housing and housing for students with disabilities.

University of Kentucky Athletics

At University of Kentucky there are a variety of athletic options for students interested in joining a sports program.

Intercollegiate sports are the highest tier of college sports and can be very competitive. Intercollegiate teams are regulated by the NCAA, funded by the university, and compete against teams from other universities. The division of a sports team depends on the size of the university, funding, and competition level. An intercollegiate school team will be Division I, II or III, with Division I being the highest level.

Club sports are not regulated by the NCAA and are a great option for students not interested in trying out for an intercollegiate team. Club sports are usually student run but can also be funded by the university.

Intramural sports are the most casual and informal. Intramural sports are often free and require very little time commitment.

Safety at University of Kentucky

College is like a home away from home. Whether you're walking to class or coming back from late-night studying (or partying!), it's important to feel safe on campus.

University of Kentucky is patroled 24 hours a day by trained security. The University of Kentucky campus has emergency telephones or alarms for students to use anytime of day or night.

University of Kentucky offers late-night transportation or safety escorts for students. Campus housing is secure and dorms can only be accessed with secure key cards.
