Southwest Academics

Southwest Virginia Community College requires a minimum of to graduate with a bachelor's degree. Students can choose the accelarated degree program if they would like to finish all the credits for graduation in less time than normal. Southwest does not offer an orientation program before the start of fall classes.

Which Courses Do I Have To Take at Southwest?

Southwest has a core curriculum, which means there are certain classes or types of classes all students must take to graduate. Students do not need to fulfull a language requirement or a math or science requirement. Students are not required to take a computer class to graduate.

When choosing a major, Southwest students have several choices to make. Scroll down to see a full list of majors offered at Southwest below. Student struggling to choose just one area of study may consider a double major. Double majoring may mean taking more courses, but it can provide an interesting mix of experience that helps students stand out when looking for a job or applying to a graduate program.

Students must choose one of the majors offered by the college. Self-designed majors are not allowed. Southwest does not require all students to complete a senior project.

Southwest has distance learning options for students who are interested in taking classes online.

Does Southwest Give Credit for AP Classes?

Southwest offers some credit for Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken in high school. Schools have different requirements for what AP scores they accept, so some students may not receive AP credit.

Does Southwest Have An Honor's Program?

Southwest offers an honors program for highly-qualified applicants, and does not offer a Freshman Honors College. The Freshman Honors college provides a rich curriculum for highly-motivated first-year students.

Does Southwest Require Internships?

Southwest does not require an internship for all students Students can still look for internships during the summer, or gain work experience with a part-time job.
