Eastern Washington University Student Life

Eastern Washington University is on a 335-acre campus in a suburban setting in Cheney, Washington, not far from Spokane. There are many activities and organizations for Eastern Washington University students to participate in – band, chorus, theater groups, a campus newspaper, a radio station and more.

Eastern Washington University also has fraternities and sororities.

Eastern Washington University has a thriving STEM Advice & Support (STEMAS). In fact, more students participate in STEM Advice & Support (STEMAS) than any other on-campus activity.

Other popular student organizations at Eastern Washington University include Biological Student Organization (BSO), Women in Science at EWU (WiSE), Honors Club and Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association (SADHA).

Does Eastern Washington University Offer Student Housing?

Eastern Washington University offers housing. Students are required to live on campus through freshman year. First year students are guaranteed on-campus housing.

The majority of Eastern Washington University students live on campus. In 2021, 6% of undergrads at Eastern Washington University lived in some kind of on-campus housing and 92% of students lived off-campus or commuted to Eastern Washington University. There are 1,915 spots available in on-campus housing for all 10,293 undergraduates. In the 2020-21 school year, 450 students chose to live in campus housing. On the weekends, about 70% students stay on-campus. First year students are allowed to park a car on campus.

Eastern Washington University offers coed housing and housing for students with disabilities.

Eastern Washington University Athletics

At Eastern Washington University there are a variety of athletic options for students interested in joining a sports program.

Intercollegiate sports are the highest tier of college sports and can be very competitive. Intercollegiate teams are regulated by the NCAA, funded by the university, and compete against teams from other universities. The division of a sports team depends on the size of the unversity, funding, and compention level. An intercollegiate school team will be Division I, II or III, with Division I being the highest level.

Club sports are not regulated by the NCAA and are a great option for students not interested in trying out for an intercollegiate team. Club sports are usually student run but can also be funded by the university.

Intramural sports are the most casual and informal. Intramural sports are often free and require very little time commitment.
