Iowa Academics

The University of Iowa requires a minimum of 120 semester hours to complete a bachelor's degree. Students can choose the accelarated degree program if they would like to finish all the credits for graduation in less time than normal. Around 72% of students who started college at Iowa finish the requirements for graduation within six years. Iowa offers an orientation program before the start of fall classes to prepare new students for college life.

Which Courses Do I Have To Take at Iowa?

Iowa has a core curriculum, which means there are certain classes or types of classes all students must take to graduate. Students need to fulfull a language requirement as well as a math and science requirement. Students are not required to take a computer class to graduate.

Majors at Iowa

When choosing a major, Iowa students have several choices to make. Scroll down to see a full list of majors offered at Iowa below. Student struggling to choose just one area of study may consider a double major. Double majoring may require more work but it can provide an interesting mix of experience that helps students stand out when looking for a job or applying to grad school.

If students would like to study something that is not offered as an official major, they can design their own major. Iowa does not require a senior project for all students.

Does Iowa Have Services For Students With Disabilities?

Iowa offers services for students with disabilities. Prospective students can contact the college's Office of Disability Services to learn more about any support and accomodations offered. These conversations are usually kept confidential and will not be shared with the admissions office if you do not wish to share.

Iowa has distance learning options for students who are interested in taking classes online.

Does Iowa Give AP Credit?

Iowa offers some credit for Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken in high school. Schools have different requirements for what AP scores they accept, so some students may not receive AP credit.

Does Iowa Have An Honor's Program?

Iowa offers an honors program for highly-qualified applicants, but does not offer a Freshman Honors College.

Does Iowa Require Internships?

Iowa does not require an internship for all students Students can still look for internships during the summer, or gain work experience with a part-time job.
