SMU Academics

Southern Methodist University requires a minimum of 122 credit hours to graduate with a bachelor's degree. Students can choose the accelarated degree program if they would like to finish all the credits for graduation in less time than normal. Around 81% of students who started college at SMU complete all the credits required within six years. SMU offers an orientation program before the start of fall classes to prepare new students for college life.

What Classes Do I Have To Take at SMU?

SMU has a core curriculum, which means there are certain classes or types of classes all students must take to graduate. Students are not required to fulfill a lanuage requirement , but there is a math and science requirement. Students are not required to take a computer class to graduate.

Majors at SMU

When choosing a major, SMU students have several choices to make. Scroll down to see a full list of majors offered at SMU below. Student struggling to choose just one area of study may consider a double major. Double majoring may mean taking more courses, but it can provide an interesting mix of experience that helps students stand out when job searching or applying to grad school.

If students would like to study something that is not offered as an official major, they can design their own major. SMU does not require a senior project for all students.

Does SMU Offer Learning Disability Services?

SMU offers services for students with disabilities. Prospective students can contact the college's Office of Disability Services to learn more about any support and accomodations offered. These conversations are usually kept confidential and will not be shared with the admissions office if you do not wish to share.

Does SMU Offer Online Classes?

SMU has distance learning options for students who are interested in taking classes online.

Does SMU Give AP Credit?

SMU offers some credit for Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken in high school. Schools have different requirements for what AP scores they accept, so some students may not receive AP credit.

Does SMU Have An Honor's Program?

SMU offers an honors program for highly-qualified applicants, but does not offer a Freshman Honors College.

Does SMU Require Internships?

SMU does not require an internship for students in some majors only. Internships can help students gain hands on work experience for their resume, and explore career paths that interest them without committing to one path.
