Amherst Academics

Amherst College requires a minimum of 32 courses to complete a bachelor's degree. There is no accelarated degree program, . Amherstdoes not offer classes during the summer. Around 95% of students who started college at Amherst finish the requirements for graduation within six years. Amherst offers an orientation program before the start of fall classes to prepare new students for college life.

Which Courses Are Required at Amherst?

Amherst does not have a core curriculum. Since there are no specific-classes required in order to graduate, students have a lot of flexibiity about what classes they choose to take. Students are not required to fulfill a lanuage requirement or a math or science requirement. Students are not required to take a computer class to graduate.

Majors at Amherst

When choosing a major, Amherst students have several choices to make. Scroll down to see a full list of majors offered at Amherst below. Student struggling to choose just one area of study may consider a double major. Declaring a double major may require more work but it can provide a unique combination of experience that helps students stand out when looking for a job or applying to a graduate program.

If students would like to study something that is not offered as an official major, they can design their own major. Amherst does not require a senior project for all students.

Does Amherst Offer Learning Disability Services?

Amherst offers services for students with disabilities. Prospective students can contact the college's Office of Disability Services to learn more about any support and accomodations offered. These conversations are usually kept confidential and will not be shared with the admissions office if you do not wish to share.

Does Amherst Offer Online Classes?

Amherst does not have distance learning options or fully-online programs, so students must be able to attend classes on-campus.

Does Amherst Give AP Credit?

Amherst does not offer credit for Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken during high school.

Does Amherst Have An Honor's Program?

Amherst does not offer an honors program, but does have a Freshman Honors College. The Freshman Honors college provides a rich curriculum for highly-motivated first-year students. .

Amherst does not require an internship for all students Students can still look for internships during the summer, or gain work experience with a part-time job.
