Macalester College Visit Report by Yawnmom
Admissions Interview: No - We were visiting schools my daughter had already been admitted to.
Information Session: No - Speaker was friendly but distant; we did not feel comfortable approaching him with questions. The information session was essentially a slide show that focused on three students.
Campus Tour: Yes - Very unfortunate. We had a freshman who didn't know much, and tried her best, but was just too green. An experienced guide person went with our group, but he didn't say anything. Not great.
Classroom Visit: Yes - Daughter felt that she would fit in well with the classroom discussion, and would be right in the middle of the intellect curve. Great classroom experience.
Campus Visit Notes for Macalester College
We had expected to absolutely love Macalester, and my daughter came away feeling that (a) She would by far be the most social person of any friend groups she made, and she's actually fairly shy. (b) The students did not seem happy. This overshadowed our entire visit---and other than the admissions lady, we got the distinct impression that nobody cared if we were there or not. We did not feel welcomed by the intro session, and our senior tour guide was stand-offish. It felt like they felt they were doing us a favor to be there for us.
We toured St. Olaf the following day, and fell in love. Could not have been more different---happy, talking, laughing, goofy students. Buildings full of light. Staff that went out of their way to be friendly to us. Students who went out of their way to be nice to us. Got a strong sense of family there---and we felt welcome. When my daughter and I went home, we were both just like--wow, that was a no-brainer. We got thank-you notes from our guide, and from all sorts of other people. My daughter cannot wait to attend!
