UMD Academics

University of Maryland, College Park requires a minimum of 120 semester hours to complete a bachelor's degree. If students would like to graduate in less time than normal, they can choose the accelerated degree program. Around 87% of students who started college at UMD complete all the credits required within six years. UMD offers an orientation program before the start of fall classes to prepare new students for college life.

Which Courses Are Required at UMD?

UMD has a core curriculum, which means there are certain classes or types of classes all students must take to graduate. Students are not required to fulfill a lanuage requirement , but there is a math and science requirement. Students are not required to take a computer class to graduate.

Majors at UMD

When choosing a major, UMD students have several choices to make. Scroll down to see a full list of majors offered at UMD below. Student struggling to choose just one area of study may consider a double major. Double majoring may mean taking more courses, but it can provide an interesting mix of experience that helps students stand out when looking for a job or applying to grad school.

If students would like to study something that is not offered as an official major, they can design their own major. UMD does not require a senior project for all students.

Does UMD Have Services For Students With Disabilities?

UMD offers services for students with disabilities. Prospective students can contact the college's Office of Disability Services to learn more about any support and accomodations offered. These conversations are usually kept confidential and will not be shared with the admissions office if you do not wish to share.

Does UMD Have An Online Program?

UMD has distance learning options for students who are interested in taking classes online.

Does UMD Offer AP Credit?

UMD offers some credit for Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken in high school. Schools have different requirements for what AP scores they accept, so some students may not receive AP credit.

Does UMD Have An Honor's Program?

UMD offers an honors program for highly-qualified applicants, and does not offer a Freshman Honors College. The Freshman Honors college provides a rich curriculum for highly-motivated first-year students.

Does UMD Require Internships?

UMD requires an internship for students in some majors only. Students can look for internships during the summer, or gain work experience with a part-time job.
