SUNY New Paltz Student Life

SUNY New Paltz is on a 216-acre campus in a small town setting in New Paltz, New York. There are many activities and organizations for SUNY New Paltz students to participate in – chorus, theater groups, a campus newspaper, a radio station and more.

SUNY New Paltz also has fraternities and sororities.

SUNY New Paltz has a thriving Student Association. In fact, more students participate in Student Association than any other on-campus activity.

Other popular student organizations at SUNY New Paltz include Residence Hall Student Association, Outing Club, The Oracle Newspaper and United Greek Association.

The SUNY New Paltz community comes together each year for SA Spring Concert, Dance Evolution and Spirit Weekend.

Does SUNY New Paltz Offer Student Housing?

SUNY New Paltz offers on-campus housing. Students are required to live on campus through freshman year. First year students are guaranteed on-campus housing.

Most SUNY New Paltz students live off campus. In 2021, 25% of undergrads at SUNY New Paltz lived in some kind of on-campus housing and 75% of students lived off-campus or commuted to SUNY New Paltz. There are 3,198 spots available in on-campus housing for all 6,597 undergraduates. In the 2020-21 school year, 3,184 students chose to live on-campus. First year students are not allowed to park a car on campus.

SUNY New Paltz offers coed housing and housing for students with disabilities.

SUNY New Paltz Athletics

At SUNY New Paltz there are a variety of athletic options for students interested in joining a sports program.

Intercollegiate sports are the highest tier of college sports and can be very competitive. Intercollegiate teams are regulated by the NCAA, funded by the university, and compete against teams from other universities. The division of a sports team depends on the size of the university, funding, and competition level. An intercollegiate school team will be Division I, II or III, with Division I being the highest level.

Club sports are not regulated by the NCAA and are a great option for students not interested in trying out for an intercollegiate team. Club sports are usually student run but can also be funded by the university.

Intramural sports are the most casual and informal. Intramural sports are often free and require very little time commitment.

Safety at SUNY New Paltz

State University of New York at New Paltz is patroled 24 hours a day by trained security. The SUNY New Paltz campus has emergency telephones or alarms for students to use anytime of day or night.

SUNY New Paltz offers late-night transportation or safety escorts for students. Dorms can only be accessed with secure key cards so that students can feel confident that they are safe in on-campus housing.

Additionally, SUNY New Paltz has safety seminars, RAD Women's Self Defense.
