Columbia Academics

Columbia University requires a minimum of 124-128 credit hours to complete a bachelor's degree. Students can choose the accelarated degree program if they would like to finish all the credits for graduation in less time than normal. Around 97% of students who started college at Columbia complete all the credits required within six years. Columbia offers an orientation program before the start of fall classes to prepare new students for college life.

What Classes Do I Have To Take at Columbia?

Columbia has a core curriculum, which means there are certain classes or types of classes all students must take to graduate. Students do not need to fulfull a language requirement , but there is a math and science requirement. Students do not have to take a computer class.

Majors at Columbia

When choosing a major, Columbia students have several choices to make. Scroll down to see a full list of majors offered at Columbia below. Student struggling to choose just one area of study may consider a double major. Declaring a double major may require more work but it can provide a unique combination of experience that helps students stand out when looking for a job or applying to grad school.

If students would like to study something that is not offered as an official major, they can design their own major. Columbia does not require all students to complete a senior project.

Does Columbia Offer Learning Disability Services?

Columbia offers services for students with disabilities. Prospective students can contact the college's Office of Disability Services to learn more about any support and accomodations offered. These conversations are usually kept confidential and will not be shared with the admissions office if you do not wish to share.

Columbia offers some credit for Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken in high school. Schools have different requirements for what AP scores they accept, so some students may not receive AP credit.

Columbia does not require an internship for all students Students can still look for internships during the summer, or gain work experience with a part-time job.
