The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)

Pros: Americans may get a kick in their ethno-centric behinds to see unfamiliar foreign schools (e.g., Japan’s Kyoto University) ranked ahead of some Ivies. Even among the Stateside schools, there are surprises: e.g., here, U. Wisconsin bests Johns Hopkins and Northwestern; U. of Washington tops Washington U. Even those who (wisely) don’t take these ranks as gospel truth may find the shake-ups eye-opening.

Cons: The list is rife with international schools that most CC readers will never attend. It includes only universities, not colleges.
