Discus: High School Life and Pre-college Issues: JOBS... who has them and what are they?
By Anovice (Anovice) on Tuesday, October 05, 2004 - 05:21 pm: Edit

So, I am curious to see what other high schoolers do for a job. Most of my friends don't work and they don't understand why I do...

I work at a gym as a fitness instructor, make $8.50 an hour but get commission which is about 40-70 every week. I don't really do much, just talk with the members, make sure they're do everything right, energize them, do my homework, study for tests... whatever, really. I work 8-12 hrs a week but cut down during the holidays.

So:

What's your job:
What do you make:
How many hours do you work a week:
What made you want the job:

Functions: Clerk, maintenance, and donut 'finishing'
How many hours?: average 25 /wk
Why do I want the job?: I dont, but my city sucks and its the only place to work at

Job: Hyperpipe Webhosting
Functions: Technical Consultant (I am the former founder/owner of this company)
How many hours: about 10 /wk
Why do the job?: Free web hosting, and its fun

Job: commercial website design
Functions: I design websites for money
How many hours: when I have one to work on, sometimes more than 40 hours a week (this being done after school and after my other jobs are done)
Why want the job?: I am good at website design, and it makes some extra money, and its fun at times

Im strange, so dont assume having all this to do is normal :)

Job: "Media Design"
Functions: Co-founder (me and my bro)
How Many hrs: All the hours between HW, eating, and sleeping.
Why I want the job: It's fun not working for anyone else. My brother does all the legal aspects and handles money and such, while I handle the actual design and talk with clients and such. It can be quite a hassle sometimes because, for example, I live in NJ and I have a client in NY and they want to talk about a design @ 10AM. So, I have to leave school and go (which is pretty damn cool, if you ask me). Funny thing is I got into this so I can put it as my main EC, and now I <3 it. BTW, I put media design cause it's not only websites; services include, but not limited to: hosting, design, development (back-end coding), video design/editing (3D as well as actual footage), audio editing/design (my brother goes to Berklee College of Music, so he handles this). That's about it. Best thing is I have a staff and I could tell them to do w/e ^_^. (Yea, it's an actual company, it's not @ my own house even if I do most of my work from home. We have the entire 1st floor of a building (thanks to my dad buying the building :D). Life's pretty darn good in the business/money area. But this college things a drag.

No one else works? ... fairly pathetic!

Magoo- are you sure you don't live in Washington DC? I know this kid who has done nearly the same thing as you only I believe he started it with his father not brother. He just bought a 2001 911 Carerra... I am so jealous of him(I had a restored '77 911 until some moron stole it and tore it apart!)(just for clarification, he didn't buy it with the money he makes, with his parents, but I am still jealous!)

For me, I don't work for the money but I work to get away from the rest of my life. I do alot of other "jobs" which I don't get paid for (or minimal) with the state association of student council and the community. No one understands why I work, especially at a min wage job(a little over, but not much)...

I work at a coffeeshop for $5.40/hr plus tips.
9-15 hours a week, depending on if anyone needs a sub.
I wanted the job because the atmosphere is awesome, the work isn't hard, it smells good, I get free coffee (and soup, and drinks, and bagels, and whatever else), and having money is always fun.
