Discus: High School Life and Pre-college Issues: National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF)
By N1bigdude (N1bigdude) on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 - 12:42 am: Edit

Hello, I was one of two students in my school to be nominated for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law (NYLF). I was wondering how prestigious this forum is, if at all. I have already signed up to go, but I will be consequently missing 4 days of school. With my demanding schedule of 4 APs, I am worried that I will get very behind. So my main question is whether this will aid me in getting accepted into a top-tier college?

It's not prestigious because you don't have to apply. At my school, you just ask your teacher to nominate you and then you can go. It's a fun time if money is no problem to you. If you are really the leader type at your school, then this will help make you look more like a leader, but it might just make you look like a rich kid with too much money and nothing to do with it.

My son went to the one on Technology in San Jose last summer. He is really into science and tech so we thought it would be a good chance to see what opportunities in the field exist. He really has no idea what to do as a profession. Just knows he wants to major in Math. and Physics in college. So we thought, ok it might be worth the money. Well, it wasn't. The Forum was disorganized and choices he made for site visits were lost so he ended up going to places that were not exciting. He also said that the kids there were very disrespectful to the adults and speakers as well to each other. Might reflect their priviledged upbringing. He said it was OK but was clearly disappointed. A lot of money for very little. I have heard the ones held in DC are good. He was nominated by a teacher at his school so he did not ask to go. He did go to Gov. School in VA and that was much more of a bargin and a better experience. He really enjoyed it and the competition to get in is high.
Don't be fooled by the fancy invitation to the Forum.

I went to the one on medicine at Tulane summer before last. It was an incredible experience and I would recommend it to everyone!!! I finally know what I want to do with my life! I think it just depends on your own attitude toward the forum.

I spoke to my son again about the Tech Forum in San Jose. He said the speakers, for the most part, were great but still says the Forum, for the reasons stated, was disappointing.
