Does anyone know anything about Mu Alpha Theta? On the website it says it's a math honor society, but is it really that great? My school has a math club, but it's basically just all these kids that come to eat food and do no math. So would changing it to a Mu Alpha Theta chapter add more structure? Thanks.

mu alpha theta is definitely ALOT better than your math club.
in our county, we have 6 competitions in a year where we compete with other students in the math class we are taking.
yes it is great if you do well in it. or you could be like my school where we join and end up not doing anything and not showing up to the competitions

?
I'm thinking about starting a mu alpha theta chapter at my school, but our math club is already active.
We compete in the monthly 6-question math contests, the Mandelbrot competitions, the AMCs (and AIME for those who move on), the NJMTS, Knowledge Master (so we're infringing on academic decathlon-quiz bowl territory, pfft, and JETS (again, infringing on engineering club, pfft).
Hoping to expand more this year with more group practice sessions and maybe some exploratory meetings.
Anyone participate in ARML?
How about international tournament of the towns?

Hey we do the 6 Question things do! How do you sign up for Mandelbrot? All I know about it is that the starter-uper is Richard Ruscyzk from artofproblemsolving.com and he called Mandelbrot from a payphone in Princeton asking for permission to use his name.

Vinny919,
I think Mu Alpha Theta could add some structure to your math club. There are 6 competitions year round (at least in Florida) plus state and National Convention that offer oppurtunities for kids to show and improve their math skills. One advantage to having a Mu Alpha Theta club as opposed to only having AMC and AIME is that the members get to meet kids that have similar interests (math/science) from across their state and even the Nation. I've been a member of MAO for 3yrs (this is my 4th) and its been an awesome experience, even if you don't place the members of MAO are usually the best in their school and can ace standardized math tests easily (AP's, SAT's...). There's a lot you can learn from Mu Alpha Theta besides how to solve difficult math problems, I suggest you give it a try. If you need further help or wish to contact some mu alpha theta members there's a message board site: http://cgi.tripod.com/gabor_2001/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=discussion;action=display;num=1092358111
hope I helped
