I'm definitely a rap man, I have been all my life. But not that cheap nothingness in the mainstream today. With me, either you go with someone who rapped about somethin before (Tupac and co.) or you look at where the meaning's at now, and it's in the underground and Christian hip hop movements. AKA, if you guys want to find the deepest lyrics out there, check out Lojique or someone like them. www.lojique.com. But share what you guys like and why you're such a fan of that particular genre.

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 01:38 am: Edit

Indie/Alternative
I know, that's like the most ambiguous genre EVER but I have no idea how else to classify the stuff I like.

My favorite artists- Belle and Sebastian, Elliott Smith, the Beatles, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, the Decemberists, the Magnetic Fields, to name a few (I'm such a music nerd!:))

By Just_Forget_Me (Just_Forget_Me) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 03:23 am: Edit

I guess I'll jump on the Alt/Ind bandwagon.

My favorite bands are in that genre (Bright Eyes, Postal Service, etc), but I listen to a lot of other stuff too. Some hardcore (well, emocore is probably more accurate), some rap (especially britrap!), some older stuff.

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 04:23 pm: Edit

Vegangirl you rock, those bands/artists are all so awesome...I've been a Beatles and Elliot Smith devotee for years, and have slowly expanded my collection...just starting to get into the Magnetic Fields, Belle & Sebastian, Modest Mouse, Decemberists, etc. I'm sure you're well-versed in the language of "indie/alternative," but if you havent already, you should definately check out Neutral Milk Hotel, Bishop Allen, Nick Drake, The Shins, Broken Social Scene, Cat Power, Ryan Adams, The Coral, Josh Rouse...really awesome stuff.

(Oh yeah, and as for my favorite kind of music, it would be a sin to not mention the Stones, The Who, Dylan, Springsteen, the Grateful Dead, the Strokes, Convoy [CHECK THEM OUT], Paul Simon, Air, Sheryl Crow, Wallflowers, Van Morrison, Bon Jovi [forgive me for this guilty pleasure but im living on a prayer :-P])

anyone wants to talk music, e-mail me, we'll swap titles

Im also going to jump onto the Alternative/Rock/Indie bandwagon.
Modest Mouse, Muse, Blink 182, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, Maroon5, Hoobastank, Yellowcard, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs...

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 09:12 pm: Edit

Bebere, yay for good music!! Of the bands you mentioned, my favorite is the Shins. I love them! Hey, what's Neutral Milk Hotel's best LP, in your opinion? I've been meaning to check them out:)

By Altsuperhero (Altsuperhero) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 09:28 pm: Edit

In aeroplane over the sea

I'll jump on the Indie bandwagon, though I'm more of a soft rock, ambient pop person

Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, Built to Spill, 764-HERO, Counting Crows, Belle and Sebastian, Modest Mouse, etc.

along with the stuff everybody loves (Coldplay, Radiohead, Beatles, Flaming Lips (okay, going out on a limb here), Simon and Garfunkel)

right now, I'm sampling Fiona Apple, Emm Gryner, Eisley

check out audioscrobbler.com (when the coders finish their maintenance work)

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 12:09 am: Edit

Yea, Altsuperhero is 100% right...In the Aeroplane Over The Sea is NMH's masterpiece.

And of course, the Shins=G-ds.

I've never heard of Emm Gryner...I'll give her a shot.

Ahh, Alt, I'm ashamed, I forgot to include Radiohead and the Flaming Lips in my post

I like Pure Moods Cds
and sarah brightman, grew up listening to her because of mom.
I'm also getting into jazz now.
I like all kinds of music but I'm more focused on whether I like the song or not. I can't go through a CD without skipping songs.

By Just_Forget_Me (Just_Forget_Me) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 02:38 am: Edit

Altsuperhero-I used to have audioscrobbler, but my plug in just stopped working. I think they updated the servers, but didn't post a new iTunes plug in or something. It was a cool idea while it worked for me.

By Tropicanabanana (Tropicanabanana) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 02:40 am: Edit

I only really listen to 3 bands/ people...Bob Dylan, the Clash and Paul Simon. I have other stuff, too, but any time I want to listed to music, I want to listen to them.

By Congresssenator (Congresssenator) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 08:25 am: Edit

I have an AudioScrobbler account! It's at SenatorCW; check it when it comes back on.

Hooray to all who listed bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Decemberists, The Shins. I'll add Interpol, Goo Goo Dolls, The Rapture, Electric Six, Elefant, David Bowie, Clinic, Athenaeum, Angie Aparo, French Kicks, The Walkmen, Hot Hot Heat, Foo Fighters, Live, Mercury Rev, Morrissey, The Smiths, Muse, My Morning Jacket, Nick Cave, Nickelback (just kidding), Phantom Planet, RHCP, Rooney, Sister Hazel, Steely Dan, The Cure, The Divine Comedy, The Flaming Lips, The Stills, The Strokes, The Weakerthans, The White Stripes, the Wrens, Travis, Wilco, Xiu Xiu, Zwan. I'm starting to get more into Beulah and Neutral Milk Hotel. Also harbor a soft spot in my aural cavities for Kylie Minogue.

I'm all over the place. I listen to mostly classical, but I also love the following bands.

Rage Against the Machine
Tool
Nirvana
The Prodigy (kick ass techno)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
White Stripes

Now I despise rap, but I used to like it.

I love the Dandy Warhols, and the Grey Album. I've been listening to more and more Dylan lately, but it breaks my Music Rule #1: Anything my parents listen to, officially sucks.

Anyone here listen to, argh, my genres are failing me (fashioncore?), stuff like the Faint, and Hot Hot Heat?

Another incredible band that no one's mentioned: Straylight Run. Members of Taking Back Sunday + Breaking Pangea combined (along with John Nolan's INCREDIBLY hot sister Michelle) to make a band that WILL take over the world. www.straylightrun.com

JustForgetMe...the Grey Album? As in JayZ meets the Beatles? I have to admit, when I read an article about that a while back, I was floored. It seemed like sacrilege (yeah, yeah, I'm one of those uptight Beatles fanatics). But I listened to it...it wasn't half bad. In fact, it was sorta, umm, good. Although it didn't flow that well. But it was interesting. Though I have to say that I prefer the respective originals to the genre-melding hybrid. And of course, the Dandy Warhols rock. You should check out The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Genius. Especially "(David Bowie I Love You) Since I Was Six." And "B.S.A." And "When Jokers Attack." The list goes on. And I urge you to reconsider your self-proclaimed Music Rule #1. Don't underrate the music. Or rather, don't underrate your parents. Heck, make it a bonding experience. My dad and I make it a habit to see concerts together: Rolling Stones, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Dead, even The Strokes. Hehe, boy did he look out of place! Anyway...let me just put in one last vote for Convoy. Very very cool San Diego band...They kinda sound like what you would get if Jules Casablancas (of the Strokes) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) had a child. And for anyone who caught that Sheraton commercial a while back, they were the ones singing the Stones cover "Let's Spend The Night Together." Ahh, so much good music, I can't take it. Listen responsibly.

Bebere-thanks! I've really been needing some suggestions music-wise. I'll check out the bands you talked about and tell you what I think.

oh man. the grey album. AMAZING. but i'm a hXc jayz fan anyway.

speaking of parents, definetely the doors and early cream (disraeli gears.) has anybody said hendrix yet??? gotta love jimmi. i also picked up fatboy slim from my mom, then again, she can recite whole nelly songs.

i saw phantom planet live, and they put on a really really great show. they were there with the thrills, a cool irish band with a harmonica, the killers, i don't remember much of them, and stellastarr, who has some good stuff.

sigur ros has some amazing stuff.
anybody heard of chisel?
let's see, there's my boy, wyclef, especially in his fugees days.
there's always old weezer stuff, cake, pavement, gorillaz, etc.

oh, and let's not forget justin timberlake and beyonce. two of my favorite cds.

i have...eclectic taste.

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 11:19 pm: Edit

For any Franz fans, did you guys see them/will you see them on their U.S. tour this summer? They came to Denver about a month ago, and the concert was AMAZING. Plus I got there early/stayed late, so I got to meet them. AWESOME:)

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 12:29 am: Edit

Juliusmonkey, good call on Hendrix and Cream. Clapton and Co. at their psychedelic best.

Now Phantom Planet...I've gone through phases with them. First song I ever heard was "Lonely Day," about two years ago. I loved it. And then I got hooked on "California." And then The OC came along, and the rest of the world got respectively hooked. And then I get un-hooked (hype is a major turn-off for me). And then, during that whole period when PP started get to really popular, I dismissed them as indies-gone-major, and pretended not to like them. And then they came out with their new album, released that single "Big Brat" with the cool video, and I decided that it was such a catchy song that it was OK for me to go public once again with my love for Phantom Planet. And the lead singer is really cute, wasn't he in a few GAP ads? His brother is the drummer for Rooney, another great band.

The Thrills are good too, although I always thought they were kind of derivative, and they never overly impressed me. Good, though. Although after hearing them playing on the radio in an Old Navy, I got officially turned off. The Killers are great, though, I really like that fun new single of theirs. Something about having a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that you had in November of last year? Yeah. And Stellastarr rocks. "My Coco" is officially one of the coolest songs ever.

And of course I owe much of my happiness to Weezer. Cake is sorta fun when I'm in the mood for John McCrea's monotone. I've never heard of Gorillaz, I'll definately check them out. And I've heard Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted referenced so many times in Filter and Rolling Stone, it's really time that I give it a listen. (For such a self-proclaimed indie freak, I'm ashamed that I'm not already familiar with this "Sgt. Pepper of the '90s.")

Which brings me to another question...what music magazines do you guys like? I've been looking for a good mag for a while, preferably one that covers indie music, because I couldn't care less about Britney's engagement. Which is all I read about in Rolling Stone. I mean, that mag may have history, but it's losing credibility by the second. Think way back to 1969. Didn't Rolling Stone used to report music news of the COUNTERCULTURE? So much for that. Anyway, I've enjoyed my encounters with Spin, but it doesn't come out often enough to quench my thirst. And I have preconceived stereotypes about Spin and NME, but I'd be willing to give them a try if the people recommend them. Anyway...to all the Insane Clown Posse fans out there: Good music WILL prevail.

PS: Vegangirl, that's awesome about the Ferdinand, I'm super super jealous that you got to meet them. Lucky you. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see them in NY. And this summer I'll be in New Haven :). So I'll have to check up on the dates. One thing's for sure: Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson at Yale Field on August 7th. I'm SO there. JustForgetMe, should I expect to see you there?

By Juliusmonky (Juliusmonky) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 12:51 am: Edit

Bebere:
I'm a slave to The OC, so my love has only grown. I know, shame shame, but goddamn it's addicting. Everyone is so pretty, and rich, and jewish--I'm such a shiksa. And, like you, I've listened to Phantom Planet since the early days.

I used to really be into Rooney--and then they got big. Well, kinda. I don't know, I always know about stuff first, and then once everyone else around here does, it's just not fun anymore. One less reason to be elitist.

My favorite Pavement song is "Stereo" and I think it's on Brighten the Corners, but I could be wrong. It's a strange little album, but I love it. But yes, Slanted and Enchanted is a classic.

I'm sure you've heard some of the Gorillaz songs. Kind of electronicy/alt stuff. They came out with "Clint Eastwood" and it went something like, "I've got sunshine, in a bag, I'm useless but not for long, the future is coming on." All blatant drug references--just part of their charm. And they have these cartoon egos, I never really understood the whole thing. I don't even know if they're still around, but they had a few songs I really liked.

As far as magazines are concerned, Rolling Stone is really the only one I've ever picked up, and I really like it, actually. Then again, I don't know what else is out there, and I enjoy a good dose of mediocrity--hence my love for JT.

Also, Ben Folds (mostly in his band days), Ben Harper, Beck, NERD, Interpol (Obstacle 1 is one of my favorite songs ever), Postal Service (we all need a good cry once in a while), etc.

I really really want to like the new Modest Mouse album, but I don't know...the jury's still out on that one.

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 01:16 am: Edit

oooh, that Gorillaz song (Clint Eastwood) is fun:)

Juliusmonky, do you ever listen to Death Cab for Cutie? Same lead singer as Postal Service, right? I love love love Death Cab! His voice (Ben Gibbard, I think) is so amazing. It totally carries their music, even when the lyrics get a little over the top.

I wasn't too big on the Modest Mouse album at first either, but now it's one of my most played CDs. My favorite songs are "Ocean Breathes Salty," "Float On," and "Black Cadillacs."

Have any of you guys heard of Jem? She had the free download of the week on the itunes music store, so I listened to one of her songs, "They," and really liked it. I'm just wondering if the rest of her stuff is good.

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 01:51 am: Edit

Juliusmonkey, I'll forgive you for the OC thing. Everyone has their obsessions. Personally, I'm a slave to Gilmore Girls. And I want to go to Yale. No connection, of course. And you know that dude (Adam something I think) from the OC played Dave Rygalski in Gilmore Girls. Hehe, how does a "shika" like you know what the word "shiksa" means? It's always refreshing to see gentiles who are well-versed in Yiddish.

The Pavement song was awesome. I really loved it. If there was a 24-hour record store near me, I would be there right now, waiting on line, with a Pavement album in my hand, flirting with the cute guy who works at the register. "Pigs they tend to wiggle when they walk." If that's not the most brilliant lyric you've ever heard, I beg you to show me a better one.

You were right about that Gorillaz song...it sounded vaguely familiar. They're OK,, I guess. And I must just be incredibly naive, because when I read that line, I didn't realize that it was a drug reference. Anyway, Ben Folds (Five, preferably) and Interpol are superawesome, the Postal Service is good, but they never made me cry...I've never been a huge Ben Harper fan. Or NERD. Or Beck. But there's always time.

Hmm, as for the new Modest Mouser, I give it one and three-quarter thumb up. Of course, the Mouse gets poppier and poppier with every album. But I'm not such an indie elitist that I'll stand before you and lament this. In fact, in my opinion, they've gotten more accessible, which is a good thing. This is of course proven by the unbelievable success of "Float On." Which tears me apart, of course. I hate it when these bands get big! Nevertheless, I agree with Vegangirl, "The Ocean Breathes Salty" is great, as is "Bukowski" and "Blame It On the Tetons." And "Float On" is my favorite, but if you ask me again, I'll just deny it. (It's really time I stop being such a pretentious music listener, but oh well.)

And Vegangirl, I've listened to some Jem...actually I discovered her off of the OC soundtrack. Oh, man. I'm just like all the others now. But anyway, I really like most of her songs, she's got a beautiful voice and they're very, umm, whimsical? There was one or two that leaned a bit too much on the electronic side for my tastes (surprising, because I love love love love Air), but for the most part, I liked it. "They" is great, as is "Just A Ride" and "Move On." I recommend the album.

Altsuperhero, I downloaded some Emm Gryner as promised, and I really enjoyed it. She does some cool covers; at first I was a little hesistant to hear her take on Sabbath's "Crazy Train," but by the second verse, I was a fan. Some stuff was a little bit too poppy though ("Symphonic," "Beautiful Things"). I think I like her ballads better, "Julia" was simply beautiful. And so were her duets with Matt Nathanson. Good call.

Correction, "I've enjoyed my encounters with" Filter. FILTER. I picked it up one time at the Urban Outfitters counter, and I've been a loyal reader ever since. Yeah, I know, Urban Outfitters. It's like a big Walmart that carries Strokes and Interpol LPs. So commercial. But so irresistible. They were all sold out of those Beatles shirts in the one by me (because they were previously bought by girls from Dix Hills who don't know the difference between Lovely Rita and Polythene Pam). Luckily I nabbed one at the store in Providence when I left my Brown tour early. I'm such a sucker for that store. And I want to marry a Beatle. Or maybe just a Beatles fan. Any takers?

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 02:33 am: Edit

I have that beatles shirt! My only Urban Outfitters purchase ever. Soooo worth the $25 or whatever that I spent on it (I usually don't spend that much on t-shirts). I have this dream of someday owning a TON of band shirts and wearing them all the time. For some reason I just think that would be so cool:). For now I have two beatles shirts, a Franz shirt, and the shirt that the chick is wearing on the cover of b&s's Dear Catastrophe Waitress.

So did anyone ever explain what audioscrobbler is? Cause I'm still curious.

YAY for music-y people!!

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 02:45 am: Edit

Hehe, Vegangirl, I'm the same way. Not so much a dream though, more of a fashion choice? For some silly reason, i think it's pretty cool. Anyway, my count includes Beatles, 2 Strokes, that B.R.M.C, Rolling Stones, The Who, Springsteen, Stereophonics, Simon and Garfunkel, Matchbox 20 (yay for guilty pleasures), and Dark Star Orchestra (Gratedul Dead cover band). About that B&S shirt...I had to go dig the CD out of my drawer, but now I know the one that you're talking about. Very cute, I like the frog. And as of tonight, I've decided that Paul Simon is my g-d.

We should probably stop being so damn lazy and just check out audioscrobbler for ourselves.

By Altsuperhero (Altsuperhero) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 08:05 am: Edit

alright, I guess I'm finally checking this thread:

Audioscrobbler is a plugin for your music player (Winamp, QCD, foobar2000, iPod, etc.) that records every song you play and its stats

before everyone starts screaming Big Brother and spyware, let me assure you that Audioscrobbler doesn't steal any info from your comp; it just takes a note of what you're playing

then, online, it compiles a record of how many times you've played a certain song or a certain artist

the ups:
you can check out other 'music neighbors' and see what they're listening to - probably one of the best ways to find out about new (okay, by new i mean indie) music

the downs:
audioscrobbler is constantly down (yeah, twice a month minimum) but it's still very young - the programmers can't afford to get good servers so they settle for the cheap kind based in Austria ...

audioscrobbler.com

altsuperhero

oh man, not too many Built to Spill fans here but quite a few Modest Mouse

Doug Marsch (sp?), singer for Built to Spill, has some good solo stuff

damn, Canada has some good stuff - anyone heard of Stars? okay, a bit poppy, a bit 80s, but still cool
-yes, there's a band called 'Stars' - look them up on Amazon
-yes, they're not bad even though their name is

Bebere - Emm's covers are good, but according to reviews, it's her poppy (read quasi-mainstream) release 'Asianblue' which featured symphonic etc. that really sold

I'm not a big fan of Symphonic, but I admit that most of her pop songs have good hooks - Hello Aquarius, 89 Days of Alcatraz

I've been rather selective in the Indie genre ... I've yet to check out Pavement, My Morning Jacket, Iron and Wine, the Magnetic Fields, Hot Hot Heat, Rapture, Sufjan Stevens, etc. (yeah, still a lot to go ... ) I'd appreciate any suggestions, recommendations, starting points ...

By Xenowang (Xenowang) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 10:58 am: Edit

Amitoman, I urge you to listen to Opeth over and over and over and OVER again. There's just something about them that has placed them up on my top favorite list (in fact, I would say Opeth is my favorite band to date and I can't see any band dethroning them in my mind for a while). If you don't have 'em already, get Blackwater Park and Still Life. These two albums are so mindblowing, they just absolutely floor you.

I'd say Mikael Akerfeldt is the BEST songwriter of our decade, hands down.

By Juliusmonky (Juliusmonky) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 11:42 am: Edit

Vegan:
I really like a couple DCFC songs, but I haven't heard that much, really. Yeah, I mean, I really like the Modest Mouse CD, but after all the praise I heard about it, I guess I was just expecting something different.

Bebere:
My suburb is like 99% jewish (well, 30%, but that's still a lot), and somehow, almost all of my friends ended up being Jews. So I'm the "designated goy" and "honorary jew" of their youth group. I drew these funny t shirts for the boys group when they had a basketball tournament that said, "We don't ball on Shabbos" and had picture of a jewish pimp on it. Fantastic.

Anyway, yes, Stereo is an amazing song.

What about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? I know everyone's pissed off now because they're on MTV, but they still have some good stuff.
I went through a Rilo Kiley phase, and looking back, I don't know what the hell I was thinking.
Oh, how could I forget? G Love and Special Sauce and Elliott Smith. Well, the two don't go together, but I think I did cry when I heard Elliott Smith died, because I was listening to Needle in the Hay (the one from the Royal Tenenbaums, when Luke Wilson tries to kill himself), and it's just such a sad song anyway.

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 12:13 pm: Edit

"Designated goy." "Honorary Jew." HEHe, that's hilarious.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are good...I really liked "Maps" when I first heard it, but it's so overplayed now...

Elliot Smith is amazing. My ex made me this mix tape a while back and "Say Yes" was on it...and I've been loyal ever since. He's incredible...sort of a modern day Nick Drake. But better, if that's possible. But you have to be in the right mood, he can get pretty depressing at times. Anyway, the whole Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack is great. Nico, Dylan, Velvet Underground, Vince Guaraldi (Peanuts, hehe), Ramones, etc. Not to meniton EMITT RHODES. He's really really cool. If you like the Beatles, you've got to check this guy out. He sounds so much like them, it's freaky. His later stuff sounds just like Paul Mccartney...style and voice. And one-quarter of his songs would be right at home on The White Album. And another quarter wouldn't be at all out of place on Help. And the other half are just good. Believe the hype.

Hmm, which brings me to yet ANOTHER question. (Btw, please people, I still need magazine recommendations.) What are your favorite soundtracks? My favorites are The Royal Tenenbaums, Velvet Goldmine, Rushmore, Lost In Translation, High Fidelity, Trainspotting, You've Got Mail (i know it's sappy), Forrest Gump, A Walk on The Moon, Simply Irresistible, and Shrek 2 (the new Eels song is AWESOME). Oh yeah, my favorite TV soundtrack is definately GIlmore Girls. And not because I love the show so much, either. Well, maybe. But it's good stuff. And check out The OC, if you must. But to be honest, I wasn't overly impressed. Oh, and I recall Felicity having a very nice TV soundtrack. Air, Heather Nova, Kate Bush...and a beautiful beautiful cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Aretha Franklin. Amen.

Btw, that Audioscrobbler seems pretty cool. Although I'm afraid that fellow-indie listeners wouldn't consider me a very reliable source if they saw how many times I listen to "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night." And "Sleep When I'm Dead." And "Living On A Prayer." That's Bon Jovi, baby. And I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Gotta love the Beatles, Elliot Smith (Soo happy to see he has many other fans here), the Strokes, Simon and Garfunkel, CCR, Jack Johnson, Pete Yorn (Very Underrated), and David Gray. I really tried to like Modest Mouse because float on is such a good song, but after seeing them live...

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 05:08 pm: Edit

Jer, the Mouse was that bad live? A bad performance is a sure way to put a damper on a good album. As for Jack Johnson...his music is nice and relaxing, good for a BBQ or something, but all the songs kinda sound the same. I like it though. And Pete Yorn is great...I seem to have a thing for male singers from the Garden State (hint: Springsteen, Jovi).

And Demonllama, there's nothing guilty about AC/DC!

Guys...what's the best Beatles album EVER?
I'm putting in a vote for Abbey Road. But only because it's amazing, mindblowing, incredible, beautiful, musical, etc. We all have our own reasons.

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 05:31 pm: Edit

Elliott Smith is incredible. The album he was working on when he died is going to be released later this year (I heard sometime in the fall) and I'm really excited for that. I read that it's going to be less produced than Figure 8/XO, maybe sort of a return to the Either/Or days. However it turns out, I'm glad we'll get at least a little more music from him. He's sooo amazing.

bebere87, the cool thing about my belle and sebastian shirt is that it's a band shirt, but not many people can tell that, so it's like a secret message sort of. hehe. Every once in a while when I wear it someone will come up to me and start talking about b&s, which is cool.

Best beatles album? hmmm...that's really hard.
I honestly listen to their earlier stuff the most, so my favorites are Rubber Soul and Revolver. Hmm...between those two, I vote for er...this is hard. Those are two of my favorite CDs ever. Okay, I pick Rubber Soul!

Abbey Road, no contest.

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 06:04 pm: Edit

Hmm, everyone seems to really like Rubber Soul. It was never one of my favorites. Maybe #5 or #6 on my list. Whereas Revolver is generally #2. But I'd have to think about it. And of course it changes from day to day.

YAY for Abbey Road. That albums blows me away every time I hear it. Simply amazing.

That's really exciting about the Elliot Smith album, I hadn't heard about that. I always liked Either/Or alot, so it sounds promising to me. Can't wait!

Are there any Ryan Adams fans here? He is definately one of my favorites. I try to avoid the alt-country genre, but between Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Old 97s, Rhett Miller, Wilco, Jayhawks, etc I just keep getting pulled in. There's not much I can do about it, it's damn good music. Just listen to "Gold" and you'll see that for yourself.

And, umm, another guilty pleasure: Oasis. Despite how much they rip off The Beatles. And they do. Criminally so.

mmm, I really like that one oasis song, "wonderwall," and also the bon jovi song, "It's my life." yay! My guilty pleasure is definitely Michelle Branch. I don't know what it is about her, but ssshhh, don't tell anyone :)

Well, as for my music interests, I'm all about J-Pop, classic rock, Broadway and Beatles.(Yes, the Beatles are pretty much in a league of their own here.)

As for the best Beatles album? I'm going to have to say the White Album because it represents the best average of quantity AND quality.

I personally enjoy Magical Mystery Tour because it has my two favorites, though.

By Jnick (Jnick) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 10:46 pm: Edit

I'm with you mathninja, I love rap. Mainly anytype with a solid beat, and some nice lyrics. What are some of your favorite artist besides pac. I like a lot of down south stuff, Nas, Az, Jay Z, Dipset, D-block and many more. I also love old Jazz, R&B, and old school music like the Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Marvin Gay, Ohio Players and so much more.

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 10:59 pm: Edit

Blackbird is on the White Album. Such a beautiful song too. It was the first classical guitar song I learned to play. And I like the cover of it on the I Am Sam soundtrack. There were actually quite a few good songs on there. The Wallflowers' "I'm Looking Through You" was really fun, "Two Of Us" was beautiful (Aimee Mann & husband?), and Nick Cave's "Let It Be" literally gives me chills. Anyway, the White Album is amazing, obviously, it's probably #3 on my list...but I don't think quantity is a really important factor. Wow, Koopatroopa, very few people seem to like Magical Mystery Tour. It's a solid album, definately underrated. And Rubber Soul is probably a bit overrated. At least in my opinion. Which are your two favorite songs? Allow me to hazard a guess....Boy, this is a toughie..."Penny Lane" and "All You Need Is Love"? Wait, no, "Strawberry Fields Forever"?

In answer to Altsuperhero's digression-prolonging/encouraging prompt, I prefer Blonde On Blonde to Highway 61 Revisited. The latter is still a great album, and "Like A Rolling Stone" has got to be one of the greatest songs...ever. But nothing compares with Mr. Robert Zimmerman's 1966 opus. "Visions of Johanna" and "Just Like A Woman," are sheer masterpieces.

Mathninja, so sorry to overtake your rap thread with this "monster emo monster thread." Although I object to the term "emo." Let's see if we can't find some common ground. I really like K-os. And, umm, what's her name, Ms. Dynamite. And I like Northern State (3 white girls from NY, heh). But that probably all qualifies as hip-hop. I never fully understood the difference, maybe someone wouldn't mind explaining? Anyway, I also listen to Nas and Jay-Z. And the little bit that I've heard from Tupac I love.

"Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

By Koopatroopa (Koopatroopa) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 11:13 pm: Edit

My favorites just so happen to be "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "I Am the Walrus."

In my opinion, these two songs are the zenith of Lennon's ascent into psychedelia and surrealism. That just so happens to be the Lennon I like the most, too. =)

Madvillain is rap right?

Nas has some good stuff; ditto with Tupac (okay, I'm basing this opinion on Changes and the rest of the toned-down posthumous releases)

yes ... most of my samplings come from pitchfork

they've yet to recommend a bad artist (though they probably over-hype new artists)

i don't feel like rehashing the emo/not-emo/quasi-emo debate, but let's not throw those terms around loosely

Koopatroopa, "Strawberry Fields Forever" is my favorite song from Magical Mystery Tour. There was a song that George came out with in the 80s, about the Beatles, I think it was called "When We Was Fab," and the beginning always sounded like "Strawberry Fields Forever" to me. Although as far as psychedelia and surrealism are concerned, "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" is a classic. The same goes for "Northern Song," although it's not Lennon; Lennon-inspired, no doubt. I love "I Am The Walrus" too.

"Don't you think the joker laughs at you?" ~Beatles

By Jer728 (Jer728) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 11:45 pm: Edit

I know its not one of their most popular albums, but my favorite is "A Hard Day's Night," with "Rubber Soul" a close second. I was shocked when told that they actually wrote the whole thing in such a short amount of time. Bebere87, I too am a big fan of the soundtrack to "I am Sam." I am sorry to say that I actually like the contemporary versions of "Across the Universe" and "You've got to hide your love away" better than the originals. You have to admit though that Howie Day kinda butchered "Help" by slowing it down so much. Honestly, I have to credit "Blackbird" for being the song that turned me away from the crap (Matchbox 20, etc.) that I used to be enamored by and opening my eyes to the classics. By the way, the version of "two of us" on the sountrack was written by Aimee Mann and Sean Penn's brother, Michael Penn.

I've never met anyone else who has ever heard of Nothern State!!! I looovveee At the Party and their whole Dying in Stereo cd. What a great group.

What about Franz Ferdinad? I've only heard their new single, and liked it, but does anyone know anything else about them?

Well, when I'm not listening to Jay, I guess mostly Kanye West, Nas, etc. and I love R Kelly and Nelly--their stuff is just so funny.

I'm pretty sad that Lollapalooza was cancelled--they actually had a pretty good line up, and I was even willing to pay. And I really really really REALLY wanted to see The Walkmen. And The Flaming Lips.

By Jer728 (Jer728) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 12:02 am: Edit

I bought the Franz Ferdinand CD and was actually pretty disappointed with it. "Take Me Out"(the single) and "Dark of the Matinee" are really good but after that there is an extremely sharp decline. They are similar to the Strokes but not nearly as good.

I think Franz Ferdinand is so much fun! "Take Me Out" and "Dark of the Matinee" are great. I also love "Darts of Pleasure," "40'" and "Auf Achse." I think part of my addiction to their LP is because they have soooo much energy live and listening to their CD reminds me of it:) I also think it's cool how pronounced their accents are when they sing.

Juliusmonky, what's The Walkmen's best album? I've heard a few songs by them and REALLY like them.

hehe, I spent WAY too much money on CDs.

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 02:25 am: Edit

Jer, I know what you mean about liking the covers better than the originals. When it comes to covering the Beatles, it's dangerous territory. Anything less than perfection is blasphemy. I didn't really like "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," because the original is one of my favorites, and I can't stand Eddie Vedder. Sorry, guys. Also, I really didn't like Grandaddy's "Revolution." He performed it well....it just didn't sound anything like the original! And "Julia" was terrible. I don't even remember who did it. I've blocked it out. You're 100% right about Howie Day's rendition of "Help." I never liked him that much anyway. He played at a Stereophonics show a while back, and I walked out after the first 10 minutes. Ohh, which reminds me...STEREOPHONICS. They were only decent in the beginning...but their third album was awesomely good. I'm trying desperately to remember the name...I can see the cover in my head...umm...Well, anyway, that was a great great album, and luckily my first introduction to them, or else I don't think I would have been very impressed. Incidentally, I picked it up on a whim in a black market in Peru last summer for cinco soles (about $1.50). Good memories. Anyway, some of the songs are unbelievable. "Help Me (She's Out Of Her Mind)" has some of the catchiest riffs, as does "Madame Belga." "You Stole My Money Honey," "Climbing The Wall" and "Nothing's Precious At All" are all great acoustis tracks. Ah, I could go on, but I'll stop; after all, this isn't a Stereophonics forum. Ooh, I remember the name though: You Gotta Go There To Come Back. Rather profound, isn't it?

I didn't love Franz Ferdinand's album, but I thought the single was great, and like Vegangirl said, I was told that they were awesome live. When it comes to the album though...eh. Like Jer said, they're like the Strokes, but not even half as good.

I also haven't gotten around to any albums by the Walkmen, from what I've read, their singles are good, but their albums aren't as strong. Can anyone confirm? "The Rat" is an awesome song though...Sorry to draw the same comparision, but it reminds me of THE STROKES.

PS: Jer, watch what you call crap! I <heart> Matchbox 20.

"I went to the party
It's never what it seems
I went to the party
ya know what I mean?" ~Northern State

Inspiring lyrics, aren't they?

By Jer728 (Jer728) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 10:22 am: Edit

As far as Matchbox 20 goes, I'll admit that "Yourself or Someone Like You," is good, but after that, way downhill... Never listened to anything by the stereophonics..

By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 05:22 pm: Edit

I know they have that awful "pop-rock" image, but you gotta admit...Matchbox has had some great songs. "3 AM" is one of the best rock songs of the '90s. "Real World," "Bent," "Mad Season" and "Push" are all classics. And surprisingly, their latest album was pretty solid. "Bright Lights" was awesome, I'm pretty sure "Disease" was cowritten by Mick Jagger...."Unwell" I could have done without though. "Downfall" and "Could I Be You" are also great. And they're great live...I caught them at the garden a while back (heh for you non-ny-natives, tha's MSG), and it was fantastic; the guitarist jumped up on the piano and started soloing...Anyway, I think I've destroyed my credibility enough with this paragraph-long post for Matchbox, so I'll end it here. Btw, Rob Thomas=very very attractive.

Oh, and you guys should check out Peter Coyle. "Reach For The Sun" is a great great song, he sounds alot like Peter Gabriel. But good Peter Gabriel. Very very good.

Ooooh, and The Redwalls!!! They're awesome...they sound like a mix between 1962 Cavern Club-era Beatles, early Dylan, early Stones, etc. Really fun music, sounds like they came on a time machine straight from the '60s. I'm pretty sure the album is called Universal Blues.

Anybody here listen to Rufus Wainwright? Or Dispatch?

By Juliusmonky (Juliusmonky) on Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 05:36 pm: Edit

Vegangirl: I guess my favorite would be Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone.

Bebere: Yes, Rufus was just in town, but I missed him--and Ben Folds, which I was pretty upset about.
And Dispatch's The General is a classic. I like a lot of their stuff, actually.

What about all those '90s one hit wonders? Semisonic's Closing Time is one of my favorite songs ever. There's the Spin Doctors, which I guess is more of a two hit wonder. Blind Melon's No Rain, ummm, Six Pence Non the Richer? Is that a song or a group? Hmm, what other one hit wonders were there?

Juliusmonkey, yeah, there've been some great '90s One Hit Wonders. That Sixpence None The Richer song was "Kiss Me"...the one from She's All that. And "Closing Time" was great, although I remember Semisonic having another hit? Ack, the Spindoctors...Horrible group...But I love that one song, "Two Princes." "That's what I said now." Blind Melon was great too...unfortunately the lead singer died before that group really got off the ground. They showed promise. Let's see, what else was there? There was that Faith No More song, that was pretty good, although I'm not sure if that was the '90s or the late '80s. Don't forget the Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be." Good old-fashioned think-brogued Scottish geek rock. And I loved that one song by the BoDeans, "Closer To Free," I'm pretty sure it was the theme song from Party of Five. That Cardigans song was really catchy too, although they're still coming out with stuff. None of it is half as poppy as "Lovefool" was though. OOh, how could I forget Chumbawumba?!? I remember when that song "tubthumping" came out...I was in 5th grade. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever heard. I've since matured. Anyway, there's tons more, but I'd rather go play volleyball.

Hey guys, thanks for the shout-outs to some rap artists, it brightened my day. As for artists i listen to now: In the mainstream i gotta say Kanye West is the only one that raps about anything. I love the song "This Way", and most of his hits (except "Overnight celebrity" which has a great beat if it's any consolation....which it isn't) have some meaning behind them. Also, Mase has come back actually preaching a message which i am totally psyched about ("Welcome back"). As for the rest, including Jay....totally not feelin' it. "Dirt off your shoulder" and "99 problems" are quite possibly the worst rap songs i've ever heard that hit the top of the charts. I liked his old stuff, my absolute fav bein "Hard knock life", (notice a pattern? Song had a purpose). But if i leave you guys with anything, the real stuff is in the underground and Christian scenes. Some artists to check out: Lojique, Cross Movement, KJ-52 (his song "Dear Slim" actually made it to TRL). I put Lojique first cuz they have the deepest stuff i've ever heard. It actually makes you think like poetry does. The other two are considered to have a better sound by most but still have meaning.

Wow, I can see where us indie listeners can get reputations as pretentious, have-you-heard-of-this-obscure-band-that-i-love hipsters

By Welshie (Welshie) on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 01:28 pm: Edit

My favorite music depends on my mood-- when I'm happy and I know it, I like The Aquabats and Neutral Milk Hotel. When I'm not sure, don't care and had the choice to listen to any thing, I love The Shins. When I'm feeling not so peppy, I'm down with Bright Eyes and Modest Mouse's slower songs. Granted, those are only a few bands, I'm sure you get the jist.

By Theweakshallwee (Theweakshallwee) on Friday, July 09, 2004 - 12:10 am: Edit

First, I've spent the last hour reading all the messages on this thread and I have to say that I've never come across more indie/punk/alternative references.

Soul and R&B:
Floetry, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Amel Larrieux, Angie Stone, Anthony Hamilton, Boyz II Men, D'Angelo, Des'reeEric Benet, Erykah Badu, India.Arie, Javier, JILL SCOTT, Joss Stone, Lauryn Hill, Les Nubians, Marvin Gaye, Musiq Soulchild (who now goes by just Musiq), Nina Nastasia's "Rosemary" is great, anything and everything by SEAL (you might remember "Kiss From A Rose" from the Batman movie) but "Violet" from his 1995 self-titled album is one of my favorite

Deep Hip-Hop:
I often put "Thieves in the Knight" by Black Star (Talib Kweli and Mos Def) on repeat for an hour. K-os (Bebere87, you're the only person I know who's also heard of him). N*E*R*D, Black Eyed Peas, Digable Planets, "This Way" by Dilated Peoples, Missy Elliot, OutKast. "Break You Off ft. Musiq Soulchild" "Complexity ft. Jill Scott" "Seed 2.0 ft. Cody Chesnutt" and "YOU GOT ME ft. Erykah Badu" by the Roots are all excellent.

Rap:
Everything by Jay-Z is the s**t. Then there's the Clips, DMX, Freeway, Nappy Roots, and TUPAC.

I'll be back later with my rock/alternative etc.
Hope you guys check some of these songs.

By Theweakshallwee (Theweakshallwee) on Friday, July 09, 2004 - 01:11 am: Edit

Yukimi Nagano" by Koop, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation ("The Glass Bead Came" is so chill, it's ridiculous), "Nightingale" by Norah Jones, "Sick" by Sneaker Pimps, "Weak Become Heroes" "Has It Come To This?" "Let's Push Things Forward" by The Streets, "Destiny" by Zero 7."

Easy Listening:
"Colorblind" the cover by 58 Greene, just about everything by Alanis Morissette ("Uninvited" from the City of Angels Soundtrack, "Ironic"), the Stunt album by Barenaked Ladies kicks ass, Damien Rice, everything ever done by the Dave Matthews Band, the acoustic version of "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas, I can listen to the Bang Bang album by Dispatch for hours on end, Duncan Sheik"Sunburn" and "Hemorrhage" by Fuel, "Black Crow" by Jamiroquai, "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, the Songs About Jane album by Maroon 5, "Kind & Generous" and "Carnival" by Natalie Merchant, "Crossroads" by Tracy Chapman, the entire Surfacing album by Sarah McLachlan is simply beautiful.

The All-American Rejects, Coldplay, I recently got into Dashboard Confessional ("So Beautiful" "The Brilliant Dance" "The Good Fight" are my favorites), "Inside Out" by Eve 6, Franz Ferdinand, "Father Figure" by George Michael, Guster, Jordan Knight's (New Kids On The Block) self-titled album, "Let's Take A Ride" by Justin Timberlake, Kylie Minogue ("Promises" "Secret"), "Stay" by Lisa Loeb, "Smoke" by Natalie Imbruglia, most of the albums by No Doubt, Pennywise, the version of "Hey Pretty" with the guy talking by POE, "Body" by The Presidents Of The United States Of America (aka POTUSA), "To The Moon & Back" by Savage Garden, "Secret Smile" by Semisonic makes me want to cry and the video does the same thing, "Two Princes" by the Spin Doctors, "Slow Motion by Third Eye Blind"

Rock:
"3 Libras" by A Perfect Circle, the entire ANThology album by Alien Ant Farm, "Like A Stone" and "I Am The Highway" by Audioslave, "Pepper" by Butthole Surfers, "Frank Sinatra" "The Distance" "It's Coming Down" by CAKE, "Can't Change Me" by Chris Cornell, "Change(In the House of Flies) by the Deftones, Evanescence, Everlast ("Put Your Lights On ft. Santana" "What It's Like"), "Out of My Head" and "The Way" by Fastball, The Foo Fighters ("Everlong" "My Hero"), Garbage's self-titled album, Hoobastank, I'm probably one of the few people who has all of the Incubus albums ("Stellar" "Make Yourself" "Pardon Me" "11am" "Mexico - this also makes me want to cry" "Under My Umbrella"), Kittie (I'm pretty sure no one else remembers them, Limp Bizkit, all of the Linkin Park albums, "Intertiatic ESP" by the Mars Volta, NIRVANA, "Wonderwall" by Oasis, the P.O.D. albums, Papa Roach, Queens of the Sotne Age ("No One Knows" "Go With The Flow"), Radiohead (If anyone knows where I can get a copy of there SNL performance of "Backdrifts," I will revere the ground you walk on), "Aeroplane" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, "Bother" by Stone Sour,
The Strokes ("12:51" "Last Night" "Someday"), "Tribute" by Tenacious D is a classic, "Fell On Black Days" by Soundgarden.

Anyone here like John Mayer or Josh Kelley? They both rock my socks off!! Also I really enjoy Peter Cincotti. His voice is awesome and he plays the piano like none other. That's all I really listen to. Oh, and rap pisses me off.

By Daria1000 (Daria1000) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 12:46 am: Edit

Vegangirl- you are so right about Death cab's lead singer's voice. It is so amazing. I just got my first death cab cd a few days ago and I'm in love. It's just great. Fabulous. Wonderful. Superb.

My two great loves are Incubus and Dashboard Confessional. Other than them I like Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, Mars Volta, At the Drive in, Saves the Day, Ben Harper, Jimmy Eat World, and others but I'm getting lazy. And of course I like the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel because who in their right mind doesn't?

By Entropicgirl (Entropicgirl) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 01:29 am: Edit

Radiohead and Bob Dylan are my two great loves, but my musical taste can run from Emmylou Harris to Eminem in a day. Yeah, there was this one day when all I wanted to listen to was "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight" and "Lose Yourself." That was bizarre.

By Zero (Zero) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 01:09 pm: Edit

I have a rather eclectic taste, but it leans a little towards alt rock. Some of my favorite artists are The Smashing Pumpkins, Sublime, John Denver, Jimi Hendrix, DMB, Tool, Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction, The Chili Peppers, and Tupac. I also have a weird fascination with 80's power ballads.
