Andoverhopeful, you should come to the April spring visits (unless you're a day student where I guess you could come anytime). It's a really great way to get to know Andover better before September.

Starboard, I have already scheduled a spring visit.
| By Dwaynehoover (Dwaynehoover) on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 05:36 pm: Edit |
Andoverhelpful, you should not be so excited for a few reasons:
1.Like college, its not really the high school you go to (unless its a real bad one), its what you make of it.
2.At a place like andover, there are 100 kids applying to Stanford, only 7 get in...even though most of those kids are much more qualified than the kids that get in from public school---colleges like diversity of backgrounds---obviously if they wanted to, they could accept all of the andover kids and do fine--but they don't --- so, sucks to be you.

Dwaynehoover, stop being such a pessimist- most of the kids are really happy there. There's a whole office dedicated to just student social activities where you can stop by and make suggestions anytime. The administration also really makes an effort to have something going on every week - whether it's a lecture or a carnival or a dance or something. Granted, they're mostly lame and the Andover nightlife isn't really that wild, but you can at least hang out with your friends at the dorm. And you're almost guaranteed at least a couple friends because the admissions committee really makes an attempt to get all kinds of people on campus - from preppy to artsy to sporty, etc. And Andover is clearly not the typical high school, with a 500 million dollar endowment and almost countless connections and facilities.
Also, although "only 7" students went to stanford from last year this is remarkably higher compared to public schools where maybe half the class even ends up going to college. This is also, not including the about one third of the class that ends up going to ivies and many more that go to other non-ivy but excellent schools like duke, mit, etc. There are college counselors that work with you starting in 11th grade to help you get into the college you'd like to go to. Andover students are bright and talented - guaranteed if you make it in - you'll at the very least get into a decent college. Besides, a very large misconception people have is that students go to Andover to get into a good college, thus the term "preparatory school." True, Andover and other private schools of the 50's were like that, and they still have a very rigorous, difficult academic curriculum. However kids go to Andover basically for the college experience - 4 years earlier.
Let the kid be excited if he?she? wants to. It's the enthusiasm that makes Andover Andover.

Congratulations (used to be)hopeful!
and
To Dwaynehoover: The numbers for Andover sudents getting into Stanford was 12 out of 54 (7 ended up matriculating). I'm an Andover student (a junior) and have the numbers right in front of me (they're part of the college counseling package). That's 22 percent accepted, much higher than the normal rate.

Congratulations, although whether you get into (insert your Ivy League or Ivy-level dream school here) depends on what you make of your time at Andover.

I'm not sure where Dwayne is coming from. He goes to a private prep too.....must be a rival. Congrats on getting in, now that I'm almost in college I sort of wish I'd gone to prep school. I go to a public magnet, so my education can't be faulted...but there's just something that seems very cool about a prep. The only one I ever had the chance to go to was Wayland Academy for 11th and 12th, and who the heck wants to go to Wisconsin?

Congrats Andoverhopeful...you should be very proud for being one of the lucky 500 out of 2,400 appicants who received the letter of acceptance! Andover may have even received more applications than that, so you are truly exceptional.

"damn your parents much be rich as hell if you are able to go to Andover"
JohnnyD, here's a newsflash: prestigious schools like deerfield, andover, and exeter have bigger endowments than most 2nd and 3rd tier colleges and, thus, have NEED BLIND admissions.
an avg. of 35% of students at the big three (d.a., andover, exeter) are on some form of aid, so trust me; there's more economic diversity and those schools than you realize.
