By Baggins (Baggins) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 01:48 am: Edit
I'm going to Harvard Secondary Summer School Program. I'll be taking General Chemistry for 8 weeks.
What do you think you will be taking with you? I have a list but I know I don't have everything.

I'm going to Columbia for Into to Creative Writing. I love NYC, though I wish the program was longer.
I will bring an alarm clock, a digital camera, some laundry stuff, a lamp, basic products, and my CD player and music. I might bring a small fan (leaning towards not although I hear NYC summers are sticky), or a laptop.

thats cool simplyloved, maybe we'll see eachother....
are you taking a computer with you? it says nothing at all on the website about computers, they dont say you should bring one, but they dont say not to...so idk what I'm gonna do.
By Anticatalyst (Anticatalyst) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 10:21 am: Edit
I'm going to that Johns Hopkins CTY thing and studying philosophy...but that's not really summer college...because we're totally hack and don't actually do anything. But, umm...it's fun. So, yeah.
Baggins--I hope you have fun at Harvard! If you guys get any substantial freedom at all, and you don't go to a few places in Cambridge, I'm going to have to shoot you. Are you allowed to go offcampus, or what exactly is out-of-bounds?
Alisone05--Is it a laptop/easily portable? If so, just go ahead and take it. That way, you'll have it if you want/need it and it shouldn't be too much trouble even if you don't. If it's gonna be tough to take with you, a call to the program director's office might be helpful in making the decision as to whether you'll need it. I know I did that about taking a phone to CTY a couple summers ago and it put me firmly in the "yes" category...

Oh, and blacksheep: TAKE A FAN. YOU WILL NEED IT. If there's no air conditioning in the dorm, you will die without one. If there is, it will probably break and you will die anyway. YOU NEED A FAN.

Sorry for not posting for a while. I had to go to a doctors convention (my dads a pediatrition). Harvard SSP is just like going to college except with a lot less classes. I can go anywhere I want and its total freedom. The only down part is that it cost $8,000 just for tuition and room and board.
My regular school starts on the 19th of August. My final exam for SSP is on the 18th or 19th. After my exam I have to pack and my dad has to pick me up and drive back to southern VA so I'll probably get home on that Sunday. I'll be really busy.

By Just_Forget_Me (Just_Forget_Me) on Saturday, June 19, 2004 - 10:55 am: Edit
I did "Freedom and Justice" at Cornell last year. Definitely bring a laptop if you have one, and if you don't, think about bringing a desktop (I brought an iMac, which is easier to lug around than most desktops). It makes writing papers a LOT easier, because you aren't tied down to the computer lab hours (then again, maybe the only reason I was writing papers at 2 am is because of the time I spent on AIM...).
Anyway, my 3 weeks at Cornell were some of the best times I've ever had. Those of you who are going this year, send me an email after you're done or post here telling what you thought of it.
By Alisone05 (Alisone05) on Saturday, June 19, 2004 - 03:43 pm: Edit
thanks just forget me! i'm glad you had fun at cornell. what did you think of the coursework as far as amount/difficulty? whats the grading like? i can get a pretty good idea as to the social scene from the brochure...but all they say about the coursework is that it is "college level", which in my experience can vary greatly.
also, thanks for the tip on the laptop, i'm bringing my ibook

What? -i'm a prefrosh and i don't know anything about a class!

I have no idea about the amount of work for CALS or the Junior/Senior programs.
As for the sophomore program, there was more work than I had expected. We had reading every night, and a paper almost every weekend. Plus, there was a midterm + a final. You really had to keep up with the reading + reviewing lecture notes, or you'd be up all night the day before the test. Then again, Ithaca is so beautiful over the summer, and my friends were so awesome, that ANY amount of work would have seemed like too much. I don't want you to get the idea that the courseload is impossible, and I think mine just felt like a ton, because I saved most of it for Sunday nights. If you do 2 hours a day, you should definitely be able to keep up.
The grading is MUCH easier than the work (if that makes sense). Some of it depends on who your TA is, because that's the person grading your papers/tests. But even with a hard TA, I don't think anyone got below a B-... maybe some kids who blew assignments off. I got an A, as did most of my friends.
I have a feeling Junior/Senior classes are similar in workload, but a lot harder when it comes to grading (because you're with real college students).

For those going to Stanford, what program are you doing? If it is the discovery institute for philosophy, leave a message here with any questions and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. I went last year.

Jaug1,
I have three questions.
1. How was the food?
2. Was there anything you wished you had brought with you but didn't? (e.g a fan etc.)
3. Was the workload overwhelming? (I'm actually doing the creative writing session, but maybe the workloads are comparable.) What did you do when you weren't in classes?
Thanks a million!

1) Food was outstanding. Dining hall is buffet style for all meals, wood floors, chairs and tables with chandeliers. The food itself was very very good.
2) I took everything I needed except the fan. Recommendation on campus. GET A BIKE! I got one and would have never made it to class without it
3)The workload was pretty demanding. I know for Philosophy it required 2 1-1.5 pg papers a day along with by then end 3 9 pg papers and 1 4 day debate with at least 3 pgs of documentation for each day.
When you are not working, hang around Lagunita, play some Ultimate Frisbee on the field across the street, go into Palo Alto, hang out at Tressider, order some Tiramisu at the bookshop and hang out with all the other kids there.

I was going to apply for the Harvard SSP, but I couldn't afford it. I was going to apply for the Duke Precollege program, but they provide no financial aid for the program. I applied to and was accepted into a Neuroscience class at the Brown Precollege program, but they gave me no financial aid, despite my early bird application. I applied to and was accepted into the Wash U Summer Scholars program, but they only gave me $800 of financial aid. The decisions for these took a while to come back, so I couldn't apply to a Notre Dame program that assumed you would come if admitted. So now I'm trying to find some kind of summer research I can do, but I haven't heard much from that.
I spent a lot of time and energy getting that stuff together, but it was pretty much for nothing. My family couldn't afford to send me to any of the programs without cutting into the money we had saved up for my ACTUAL college education. We needed the money REALLY badly... I made the deadlines for all the financial aid stuff, too. I wonder where all the fin. aid money went to? I sure could have used some of it...
By Bebere87 (Bebere87) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 09:05 pm: Edit
Tenbelow, maybe instead of applying to expensive summer programs, you would be better off trying to find a tuition-free alternative. If you're interested in science research/neuroscience, I recommend that contact professors or doctors in your area and see if they would allow you to do an internship with them over the summer. You could gain valuable experience, do fascinating work, and not pay a penny. If I were you, I would go down to a nearby hospital, bring a resume, and explain that you would like to shadow/work with a doctor or researcher. This is the time where the medical school students are starting in the hospitals, so I'm sure there would be lots of opportunities for you to tag along and learn. If medicine isn't really your thing, try a local university. Always go in person, it makes a much better impression. If it's a class that you are interested in, many universities allow high school students to take classes during the summer for a minimal credit fee. I know the SUNY school near me only charges $100/credit. Good luck...you deserve it. Fin aid can be heinous sometimes.

tenbelow, I have no doubt you'll still have a productive summer though.
It's sort of sad where kids who want to learn (i.e. tenbelow) don't have the $ to go to summer college, but 75% of my grade just spent around 10,000 dollars to go to summer camp. Ridiculous.
