How important are they concerning admitions?

And how much do the actual grades a student gets count with respect to the grades they get on the standerdized test?

Well, the good thing about the AP test, I believe, is that you only have to send the ones you want to send. I could be totally wrong about that, it's just what I've heard. If you do well on them, it will show that you know (or knew) what you were studying all year and that you probably worked hard. So, grades in the class aren't really important in this aspect if that's true, because if you don't do well on the test you don't have to justify it with a good class grade because you don't have to send it.

I think.

The significance of them, though, is the credit most schools will give for good scores on the tests.

I think willywonka might be wrong about that. When you send a college your AP grade report, ALL AP test grades (that includes tests you took when you were like a sophomore or a junior) are listed. The only way for a score not to show up is if you cancel the test scores right after you take the test (if you got sick or something), and then they are cancelled, even if you would have passed. So that's what I understand from the previous years taking tests and the two (thus far) that I have taken this year.

colleges only see the ones you want them to see

jhopkins100 is right. They (the colleges) only get the ones that you want them to get.

And how important are they from an admissions aspect assuming the grade in the class is an A or an A-. I'm not really asking specifics, I'm just curious.

CB charges a fee per test per colleges you wish to withold a score from. (I think it's under $10)

An A in AP Physics at some school the college knows little about may mean less than a B in regular physics at Math Magnet High. A few corroborating high scores on AP exams help to "prove" that you actually learned the material at some standardized level.
