Hi! Here is my situation: For my course schedule next yr, i selected Math HL as one of my courses. However, I really want to take the Further Math SL that my school offers. Because IB is only 2 years, i must complete both HL levels before i could take the Further Math course. I am planning to study Math 11 HL by myself and ask my ib coordinator if she could allow me to "skip" ib math 11.

My questions are :

1)Do you think it is possible? If it is, which books should i use to study IB Math HL (for year 1)?

2)When i take my IB exams, would i need to take both IB math 12 HL AND IB further math? or just one?

3)For the exams, could i take the IB math 12 HL exam as part of my group 5 and IB further math Sl as an extra certificate course?

Thank you. =)

I myself am still to take the IB (i'm a soph), but I think that the IB HL Maths course (well, this applies for almost all IB subjects) is over the period of two years with exams at the end of your senior year. As far as I know, the courses are not split into year 1 and year 2, and if you were to take further maths SL, it would simply be a 7th subject or "certificate course", with its own exams at the end of the two years. I believe that people at my school have both Maths HL and Further Maths classes, and do not complete one before starting the other.

I have no idea if this helped... but I hope it did.

On the ibo website, it said that i could take math HL and further math at the SAME time...but at my school, math HL is the prerequisite for further math SL. I am already taking a 7th subject (another science) so i could not take further math SL as a 7th subject. What i am asking is: could i study and "skip" IB math 11HL and take Math 12HL in my junior year? ...and when i have finished my Math 12HL and have taken the exam for it, do i also need to take further math as a certificate exam? Or do i only take further math exam for my group 5 credit?

Thanks in advance! PLZ HELP!!!!!=)

umm, i dunno about lots but here's my 2 cents. i'm taking a sr and taking HL this year (the number of ppl who take further is kinda insanely few. i know 2 ppl who are doing it. that's it.)

1)A good calc book + one for stats and vectors should do the trick. i personally love the REA problem solvers book when i get stuck but that's just me.

2)Both I think if you want to do what you said in the last question. however, since they are separate tests, i dont think there's any reason why you couldn't just take further. People I know taking further are doing it for their 6th test. Which leads to your last question. . .

3)I'd ask your coordinator about this one cuz it sounds like you're a soph (right?) and i think the vade mecum just got changed so that the sixth topic HAD to be an art of some form. i may be wrong.

hope that helped!

How is that possible? You only have 2 yaers of school remaining, so how can they expect you to take BOTH Math HL and then Further Math after that?

Thx for the input so far...=) Also for when universities ask for your workload and your counselor responds "most rigorous" or "rigorous"...do the counselors just select "most rigorous" if you are taking IB? OR do counselors look at your IB courses as well to decide the rigor? thx=)

oo, tough question. that would probably depend on your counselor and the scope of your IB program. For example, there are over a hundred ppl testing at my school, so I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. in addition, i think several schools (at least apps i filled out) asked for the rigor of the coursework, among other things, on a continnum. mmk, if you have any other questions about ib, feel free to email me.
