I am on a college mock trial team. My team made it to Silver Flight, but not to Des Moines.
The ONLY reason we aren't at Gold Flight is because EIU blatantly disregarded AMTA rules, cheated, and as a result lost the second ballot by two points. Those two points cost us a Gold Flight bid.
This weekend was Silver Flight, and we had to play with a Band-aid team as many people already had plane tickets for spring break.

haha ... we didn't even make it to state's ...
got booted in county semi's ... for such a small county in nj, there were 12 teams ...
i just gave up during the cross ... you know it's bad when the judge says that your conclusion was the best part (implying that your directs and crosses ... )

Man, my team got screwed. We got a by for our second match, and it ended up pushing us into 9th place. Also, we didnt even get a lawyer until about 3 days before the competition, because our whole area had a new firm organizing it. Meh...
It was fun while it lasted

We got 6th in county.
I feel bad for one of the schools in our county that went 4-0 in addition to the other two schools and didn't get into the county finals. What the higher ups did was take the top three and rank by number of points and the top two went on, which really wasn't fair.
Anyhoo. This season was much fun.

Gold flight? Silver flight? I'm so lost. It's interesting how different states do it. What were you guys' cases about (assuming they're different)? Ours was a murder trial.

The Collegiate Level Mock Trial is much different than HS mock trial I see...
College mock trial- you only go to invitationals. Even if you are a tiny- school in the middle of Iowa you will be playing against powerhouses such as: UCLA (who flies everywhere, and you have to try out for the team), Bellerman, Texas, Miami of Ohio, U of Chicago, U of Iowa (2003 champs), and Howard.
Invitationals run from Oct-Feb. The case you have will be either a civil or criminal case depending on the year; it switches off. No matter what type of case, there is a wrongful death involved. This years' case was a hockey player who had killed another hockey player on the ice. Whether it was pre-meditated or self-defense is essentially what you are arguing.
At the end of Feb. come regionals. This is where the schools around your area converge on one school and you all have at it. There are no by's (even at invitationals), every team plays 4 rounds, 2 each as defense and prosecution. After the first round, the teams are power-matched. You go up against teams with the same record. The winner is the team with the best record and highest strength of oppisition.
Usually, only 2 teams from each regional get bids to both Nationals and the play-in-tournaments (Silver Flight). However, our schools' regional (which we host) is so difficult that we get extra bids (3rd hardest in the nation, we have 4 traditional powerhouses each bringing 3 teams), for a total of 4 per each tournament. Only 2 teams per school can win bids, so if all 3 win bids, only 2 teams can go.
Silverflight- This year it was held in both Kentucky and Florida. It was divided up from the regionals as to which teams were to go where. My region went to Kentucky. There were 40 teams present. The top 4 went to Nationals.
Nationals (AKA- GoldFlight)- In Des Moines, Iowa every year. 64 teams compete. Plays like any other tournament.
Any questions?

Ohh well that explains why I didn't get the lingo. I missed where you said "college mock trial team." whoops haha. I gotta say though- hs nationals are in a much more attractive place this year-- orlando.
