Hey, I'm a NJ Gov. School of the Arts finalist and I was wondering---how many finalists are there? Is it one person per county, or what?

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 07:03 pm: Edit

hey me too
which art (for lack of better word)?

i did violin, and they said 4 violinists made it last yr

the total number accepted was like 100, and 300 were at the final audition, so for violin roughly 12 people were finalists?

probably depends on the instrument or whatever though

see you on march 21. i have all state auditions the 20th and sats the 27th so that weeks gonna be hell

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 08:16 pm: Edit

Cool!!

Creative writing.

See you on the 21st!

I have SATs on the 27th, also.

If I didn't get my letter yet, you think that means I didn't get in?

I was nominated to the School of Engineering and Technology, maybe their letters get sent out later than yours.

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 09:29 am: Edit

My friend is a finalist for the School of Engineering. He found out a few weeks ago . . .

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:11 am: Edit

anyone know if notifications have been sent out for county finalists or anything like that for the environemental school? i havent heard anything and i was nominated for it. darn i guess that means i didnt make it - and i thought my county was ghetto :)

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:13 am: Edit

He found out a few weeks ago . . .

are you sure? my friend applied to engineering too and he said they dont send letters until the 23rd or something

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:15 am: Edit

My friend for the environment found out a few weeks ago, also, lol. sorry . . .

With the exception of applicants to the School of the Arts, finalists at my school found out because the school was notified. Arts people like myself recieved a letter. So, check with your school. Don't lose hope, yet!

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:16 am: Edit

Positive. He recieved a letter and everything. Even the girl who isn't a finalist for the Arts recieved a letter saying she wasn't selected.

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:24 am: Edit

looks like instead of free full paid weeks of fun ill be at my local community college this summer. haha its ok though. but do they eventually send you a letter if you didnt make it? and do you find out through the guidance department?

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:32 am: Edit

I'm sure you'll be notified either way. If not through the mail, then through your guidance department.

Good luck, everyone!

By Magoo112 (Magoo112) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 01:23 pm: Edit

Well is it possible that they just didn't send out the letters yet? Becuase I recieved a letter on the 11th of Feb. from the superintendent of schools around here, saying that he wanted to "congratulate me on being slected as one of the FINALIST for the Governor's School of Engineering and Technologies"

Now I'm confused, because this letter was sent on the 11th and I thought they didn't know till March. Maybe it was just a tyop or something. Or maybe they meant finalist from my county...

Ahhh this is nerve wrecking, if not I'll have to apply to stanford's summer session

By Julz711 (Julz711) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 05:32 pm: Edit

Do all the schools send out letters if you're a finalist? I applied to International Studies and haven't heard anything and neither has anyone else I know except for the kids who applied to the arts school. I just wish they'd give me a simple yea or nay so I could plan my summer already...

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 09:44 pm: Edit

what?!?!?!?!? i thought we find out on march 31... (for engineering and technology)... is it different from state to state?

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 09:45 pm: Edit

what state are you in?

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 09:56 pm: Edit

NJ

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 09:57 pm: Edit

damn... i'm pretty sure i saw "march 31" on that site too... and i'm all expectant too :( i mean, i think my profile was pretty great

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 09:58 pm: Edit

wait what is a "finalist"? does that mean you've passed everything and you're guarunteed a spot?

By Saxfreq1128 (Saxfreq1128) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:40 pm: Edit

Being a finalist is the next-to-last step in the process. At least that's the case for the Arts.

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 12:34 am: Edit

oh... then i'm a finalist... nvm

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 04:13 pm: Edit

hey whats up with being semifinalist? is that the same as finalist?

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 09:17 pm: Edit

what do you mean? where did you see that you are a semifinalist?

Maybe it just means you were nominated by your school or something.

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Sunday, March 14, 2004 - 12:07 am: Edit

well you see, there are 3 levels:

1- get selected by your own school

2- get selected by the county

3- get selected by the state

from what i hear from the above people, getting past 2 (but not 3) gives the title of "finalist". i don't know what a semifinalist, nor have i heard of that term =\

yeah so you get letters and stuff, you know, like telling you that you passed a certain level

i got 2 letters: one from school and one from county, both telling me that i was "nominated". i can't wait till march 31, which is when i find out if i get into the state or not

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Sunday, March 14, 2004 - 09:16 am: Edit

yea i passed the county, so i guess that means finalist. but the letter said that at the state level it gets really competitive. whats you guess on how many finalists (30%...70%...) actually pass the last (state level)?

and do the letters come at the end of april or the beginning of april? my county letter was postmarked jan. 29, but i got it yesterday!

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Sunday, March 14, 2004 - 10:54 am: Edit

well as I said before

last year of 300 finalists 100 made it into Governor's School

by the way, I don't think they have quotas for every county, I think finalist status is given on merit or performance alone

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Sunday, March 14, 2004 - 03:05 pm: Edit

is that just for arts, or the majority of all other schools? arts may have different statistics since it is based on auditions and such. darn well if its true, 33% of getting in sucks.

also, does anyone know how selective it is at the county level? it seems that everyone at my school passed, even with my crap sat score and horrible recs

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 - 09:56 pm: Edit

my psat was 75M/75V (221 total, so 71w... w doesn't go there anyway), my weighted gpa was 4.88 (kinda low), rank 10/228.

awesome recs, awesome essays (unique in my opinion; everyone else seemed to have put "i have been interested in the delicate balance/structure of nature ever since i can remember..." i made a parallel between physics and buddhism and uh... talked about how fun it is when you derive something for yourself and look in the book to find out that you are correct in your assumptions, etc.)

recs were from physics and calculus teacher

decent E.C.'s (5 activities per year on average)

i have low self esteem.

i will if you will

By Bmilder (Bmilder) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 10:31 pm: Edit

Arts finalists are chosen only based on the quality of their tape/portfolio/whatever, not by county.

I believe last year, 5 violinists tried out. 4 originally got in, but then someone went to Interlochen instead, so all 5 violin finalists actually got in.

By Musicmom (Musicmom) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 07:45 am: Edit

Bmilder has it right.
The arts scholars are chosen on their tape/portfolio/audition. There is no quota per county.
Our son attended Arts GS at TCNJ last summer, instrumental musician.
Unbelievable program. One on one and small group instruction (he was in a brass quintet) by great professors. Wonderful bunch of motivated kids; our S has formed ongoing, tight friendships with several students he met there.
And yes, though not the primary motivation, his GS participation must have helped him gain his auditions at some selective conservatories. Still awaiting admissions decisions.

Best of luck to all on GS....it is an amazing opportunity!

are you serious?
how do you know about this?
so technically I just dont have to mess up too much?

wow that is REALLY good to know

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 03:02 pm: Edit

so for the arts the acceptance rate for finalists is around 80%?

what about the other studies like science or environmental?

i think we hear back april 1st. but we will prob get the mail around april 16th (thats when the people got it last year)

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 06:31 pm: Edit

I think the guy who went to Interlochen goes to my HS right now lol

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 01:24 pm: Edit

only 1 more week till the decisions are made! lets keep this thread alive until then

By Bmilder (Bmilder) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 01:38 pm: Edit

I know because I went last year. I'm a percussionist. There were 6 finalists, and they took 4. Still, that's a misleading rate, because 5 of 6 were ranked either #1 or #2 in All-State on various percussion instruments, so it was tough competition.

The woodwind instruments (clarinet, flute) are probably the toughest because they only take one of each.

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 02:01 pm: Edit

hope i did well

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 02:02 pm: Edit

There were A LOT more than 5 violinists today

-_-

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 08:48 pm: Edit

post when you get your final decisions in the mail. did all the smart people in your school apply to gov school? some of the really smart people didnt feel like spending their summer learning so its only the semi-smart nerds like me that applied. im hoping its the same for other schools so that i have a better chance of getting in. so what are the types of people that applied to the tech, science, and env gov schools in your school?

By Sabinscabin (Sabinscabin) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 05:45 pm: Edit

bump

ahhhh cant wait any longer for the results

:P

By Haruhara (Haruhara) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 06:41 pm: Edit

hell it'll be fun as HELL there. i can't see how "smart" people don't see that govn school thing as "not fun". it'll be like 90% almost being in college or something.

eng. and tech finds out results on March 31.

By Ilovemath (Ilovemath) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 10:25 pm: Edit

Did anyone from Ocean County find out if they were a finalist for any of the programs?

By Johnnyo5 (Johnnyo5) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 11:22 pm: Edit

Dumbgirl i feel the same way you did, i applied for environment and i cant wait to see if i got accepted im the only one from my school who applied because everyone else didnt want to waste their summer doing work, Jr. Year is stressful enough. I really want it to be next week. Good Luck to all

By Dumbgirl (Dumbgirl) on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 01:26 pm: Edit

waiting really sucks, and i have to take the sats this sat. i bet the letter will come 2 weeks late, like april 16th (the date the letters came last year, for tech at least)

once again, waiting sucks
