Does the mention of integrals make you want to vomit? When you need to differentiate, do you feel like jumping out of a second-story window? If so, then you have come to the right place! Share your thoughts, your frustrations. We know how you feel. Calculus haters of the world, unite!

By Fallentear04 (Fallentear04) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 09:44 pm: Edit

I hate the way my Calc teacher grades.. does that count? Gah... I just got through some homework. I had to find the area between two functions.. and got a negative answer. Beautiful, as they were both positive.

I actually like Calc. Meh.

By Zephyrmaster (Zephyrmaster) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 10:21 pm: Edit

I did it last year and some this year. It's tough yes, but kind of interesting I think.

By Blueberry (Blueberry) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 10:41 pm: Edit

Just wait until you get to series.

But seriously, calc is a really great class and very interesting if you really think about it. In retrospect, you'll be really glad you took it.

By Memememe (Memememe) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 12:17 am: Edit

Calculus is great. It's the first math in a long time that's actually useful.

By Mathfanatic (Mathfanatic) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 03:00 am: Edit

Why revolt? Calculus is fun. Of course, you expected that from someone named 'mathfanatic'.

By Gabushida (Gabushida) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 06:51 am: Edit

Calculus rots your brain :D

Not that I mind it. I like it MUCH more than pre-calc. Its interesting. But sequences and series are bihotches.

By Crnchycereal (Crnchycereal) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 07:18 am: Edit

I can't say that I love calculus and that I spend my free time thinking about it, but I will say that it's my favorite class this year. But then again, a lot of my other classes just •••• me off for their completely arbitrary workloads and overall tedium. Calculus, on the other hand, is really a fascinating subject and gives me a sense of satisfaction after having fully understood a concept; something my other classes fail to give me.

By Iamstupid (Iamstupid) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 03:02 pm: Edit

I find calculus much more easier than precalculus.

By Wo4567 (Wo4567) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 04:11 pm: Edit

calc is soooo great. makes physics easy.

Adding to the list of 'Calculus is great' comments

By Haithman (Haithman) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 08:20 pm: Edit

I think Calculus is great and I have yet to take the class (will Junior year). You can find out anything with Calc, it is an awesome tool.

By Glamourbaby19 (Glamourbaby19) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 08:24 pm: Edit

Yeah, I know Calc is useful to some, but for me, I consider it a big waste of time. I know that I will never again use it, so it is just a source of apathetic frustration for me. I'm glad you all like it, but I am looking to haters for support.

calculus will probably end up screwing me over just because i have a C in the class and just watch- i'll fail the final and all my admissions to colleges will be revoked.

By Bigtmushett (Bigtmushett) on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 10:50 pm: Edit

Calculus sucks. Sucks. Sucks. Sucks. Sucks. There is no way it'll ever be useful to me beyond the AP test.

CALCULUS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'Nuff said.

By Evil_Robot (Evil_Robot) on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 11:03 pm: Edit

Differential equations and linear algebra is better :)

Either that or complex analysis...

By Wonduhbread (Wonduhbread) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 12:42 am: Edit

wtf is wrong w/people? how can you like something so repetitive and difficult?

i REALLY have to work hard, and im only in AB calc.

it's poo.

By Cnn (Cnn) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 10:19 am: Edit

my 2 cents the higher the math, the easier it is.
Thats why calc was invented. to prevent all that long time consuming methods.. like for eg area under the curve omg without inegration ....
especially if the limit is infinite or etc drawing trapezoids, rectanges is boring and time consuming.
So there is no wonder that people will find pre calc boring then calc. same here. L hopital to solve the hard limits easier way just derivate num and denom of the fraction simultaneously until u can substitute and get the answer :)
also everybody knows why newton (whos credited officially) invented it to solve his kinematics (Halleys comet)with accuracy.
And math will continue to progress because people want easier ways to solve problems and of course faster with max possible accuracy:)
another eg how many ways to pick or choose 2 out 5 things? well u can count and do the tree thing on a small scale get the same answer as 5C2 but on larger scales (which is seen most of the time in real life settings ) tree diagram method would be a pain in the ***. Again combinatorics came into place.
So in short if u want to avoid tedious ways to solve any problems (in many variety subjects math is there not linguistics perhaps) learn the higest math possible or.. if u learned everything upto today invent new easier methods or new techniques, branches to help the world :) LOL! haha

"wtf is wrong w/people? how can you like something so repetitive and difficult?"
- Wonduhbread

um... calc is the least repetitive/difficult subject i have =\

i find chemistry, history, and literature classes pretty damn repetitive... oh, and bio too.

not physics though :)

sheesh sometimes i come home and just sit and think about something all day and come up with some neat ideas... i'm kinda working on how to find the length of a curve right now (i'm not going to cheat unless i get really frustrated by it), and my idea is to follow the "brute force" method of shoving millions of rectangles under the curve (like finding area), and summing the lengths of the hypotenuses of each triangle that results from the different heights of the rectangles. i just have to put it into a simplified form now...

By Haithman (Haithman) on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 - 10:26 pm: Edit

How can you hate calculus? It is a glorious tool that can be used to find just about anything. Just to understand the genius behind it is awesome.
Long Live Calculus! lol

By Ishuku (Ishuku) on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 - 11:53 pm: Edit

....You guys should be applying to Yale instead of me.

Calculus is truly the bane of my existance. Our teacher is completely heartless (she made jokes about how A=Pe^rt applies in population growth...unless there's a holocaust or a nuclear war) and whenever we don't do well in that class she assumes that we must not be studying or out doing drugs.

Yes, ma'am. The median grade on this test was a 54 because the ENTIRE CLASS OF "A" STUDENTS DECIDED TO NOT STUDY.

At least she let us retake that one.

By Fiza (Fiza) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 12:00 am: Edit

I hate that class. I shouldnt have taken it. I mean, i already had like 5 math credits without it and another AP math but noooo i just had to take it for whatever messed up reason.

The ironic thing is that my chemistry teacher basically convinced me into taking it. I literally got lower than a 40% on the final exam in that class (and no it wasnt an AP and wasnt THAT hard).

If i took another math, I'd be doing half the •••• and my GPA would be like .2 higher. lol. damn calc and damn C in that class.

By Princess_Banana (Princess_Banana) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:13 am: Edit

i love my AP Calc class
To date we have watched "Office Space" "Best in Show" and I believe "Airplane!" and "Pulp Fiction" are coming up next. Some of the funniest movies ever, my teacher is cool, we never have homework. Literally, never. Last semester I got a 99%. :)

By Princess_Banana (Princess_Banana) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:14 am: Edit

Or tests. We never have tests, either. And if we decide to take the AP exam, we get a 100% on our final. That class rocks.

By Haithman (Haithman) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:17 am: Edit

Yeah but what will you score on the AP Exam? It's fun at first, but when its time to take the exam it sucks.

By Princess_Banana (Princess_Banana) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:20 am: Edit

Well considering last year only one person passed, probably a 2, 3 at best. But who knows I have a good history with standardized tests. Plus by that time college decisions will have been decided so it won't matter. Hell I'm a senior, I have senioritis. At this point I'm allowed to apathetic.

By Haithman (Haithman) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:26 am: Edit

Ah you didnt mention you were a senior. Well in that case I am jealous, maybe my Calc class will be that easy next year and I can self study the rest for a 5. Yea I have to take the test since I will be a junior .
You are very lucky though!

By Princess_Banana (Princess_Banana) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:39 am: Edit

Well my situation is unique cuz our calc program has always been super crappy, having like 5 diff. teachers in 4 years. This one is actually better than the others, even though we mostly play Pusoydos while he edits school movies. But I mean it's not like I haven't learned ANYTHING. Right now we're on integrals and other cool stuff. We just skip around a lot. But it is very relieving to know that I have an 'A' forever in it.

By Emyh (Emyh) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:48 am: Edit

I think I died in every single math class I ever had. Until I had Calculus. And it all clicked. I love Calculus, it's the only math class I ever did well in!

By Jane1018 (Jane1018) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 03:03 am: Edit

I think I cried when I found out you are able to integrate and get the derivative of functions on your calculator. What has this year been for?

By Jane1018 (Jane1018) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 03:08 am: Edit

Princess Banana, are you joking? I don't understand how at some schools people are able to take these AP classes that look great on their college app, and get straight A's to boost their gpa, all while not doing any work. My school gives so much work and we don't even have AP classes! On average I do (or try to do) at least 3 hours of homework a night, and I don't even get it all done. And the valedictorian each year only gets like a 3.8. I've heard from more than a few people that college is soo much easier than my hs was. Ahhh. Sorry had to rant.

By Mundanesundays (Mundanesundays) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 03:37 pm: Edit

I love calculus a lot. some of it I find really tough (cough...related rates...cough), but everything that I've been doing in math for the past 4 or 5 years that seemed completely arbitrary suddenly makes sense, and I love it. It's so cool how everything clicks together, especially when you get physics in there too.

Plus, my AP Calc teacher is awesome and my class is super-cool. We sometimes spend entire periods discussing how things never actually stop moving, and sometimes we derive complex formulas because they're interesting, and sometimes we talk about "the princess bride"
