I think this would be an interesting discussion. How much sleep do you guys get, and how are your grades? If you don't want to tell about your grades, just say how much sleep you get. And maybe: sleep vs. college acceptance?

Also, does anyone, like me, hate getting up in the morning??? I do, especially when its raining and freezing cold.

how can you guys have 8-10 hours of sleep and still manage to get into MIT and Harvard?? Do you do homework or what?

By Sleepy and bored on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 03:28 am: Edit

Some people are extraordinarily smart and can do their homework in a snap, some have lousy teachers who don't give homework, and some have no extra curriculurs or extraordinary time-management skills. *sigh* I wish I was one of them.

By hvags on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 03:13 am: Edit

"astonished." getting into Harvard with 8-10 hrs sleep is common. i'm currently on my second year at Harvard College. I never pulled an all-nighter in high, managed to get at least 6 hrs of sleep per night. my AP teachers graded based on tests...there was never a homework...well, book reports.

Chocolate also helps. 4.4 UW GPA. 4 AP's, 3 Honors. 25 hrs work/week. 5 hrs volunteering. Few EC's but they take up tons of time. Insane teachers that give hours of homework and a million tests!

By Dyip10 (Dyip10) on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 11:32 pm: Edit

Cicero, it's impossible to get 4.4 UW GPA. If you get an A in AP class, you get a 5.0, however that's considered weighted not unweighted. So the best you can ever get unweighted is a 4.0

Uh 3-6 hours per night, usually not because of homework but because I can't get myself into bed before 1 AM. I have pulled a couple all-nighters before and about once every week or two I stay up until 4 AM getting something I procrastinated on done. I can't do homework on the computer until it's very dark outside and most of my family has gone to bed. Oh yeah, 4.0 uw and 1560 SAT.

This forum further confirms my suspicions. We (teens) need 8 1/2 to 9 hours and 15 minutes of sleep a night. This needs to be constant to coincide with our natural internal clocks and ensure that we are healthy, but it is not. Recent published studies have suggested strong correlations between lack of sleep and the propagation of certain properties found in corticosteriod immunosuppresants. That is, the lack of sleep below the needed mean and failure to attain constant sleep patterns takes on average 10-15 years off of your average life expectancy if habit. This is attributed to the suppression of the immune system as a result of lack of REM and advanced replication processes occuring within the final hours needed around hours 8 and 9. Short term memory loss, incapacity to properly sort through emotions, and irratibility ensue as a result of aquired neurotransmitter imbalances. As serotonin and dopamine levels decline these conditions not only become more permanent and constant but nerve impulse propagations result in the translation of mechanisms similar to those experienced while taking certain drugs and certain amounts of alcohol. I am currently applying to Princeton RD and have a 3.9 GPA UW/ 4.8 GPA weighted. I have a 1500 on my SAT (800v/700m). Why am I posting this? I am posting this because I have identified an injustice that is being commited agianst all of us. We need sleep, deserve sleep. Constitutional protections in supreme court cases identifying the pretensions of the preamble and general welfare of citizens of the country of the us are in violation. I invite you to all out protest across your respective institutions across the country. I am currently in the process of petitioning the surpreme court and discussed the issue with supreme court justice david souter at an advanced studies law and government class i have taken recently. At my high school i have founded a specific society dealing with injustices such as this and other concerns I have. We can change, we need to change. Focus needs to be on quality and betterment and not quantity and competition. I hope i have your support. I will keep you all updated on my ventures and invite everyone to draft amicus documents in our favor and give them in support of my efforts to fight on behalf of the injustices our competitive capitalist society has created-- the proliferation of inadequacy-- WE WILL WIN-- WE MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still, I have to take that class. Everybody I know started taking AP classes last year, but I didn't because I didn't have the prerequisite for the one I wanted (chemistry), and I thought it would be too tough anyway. This year I'm taking chemistry, next year I'll take Calculus and Physics C-- I can't send colleges a card with absolutely no AP classes, and these classes are a lot of work...

I do study at night though, I usually dont start homework untill after about 9 or 10, I feel more awake during those hours. I would say that im an ok student with 3.8 gpa unweighted, and 213 psat score...(ap calclus, us history, and english) as a junior. I think I must make some of this lack of sleep up on the weekend thought when i routinily sleep in untill 1 or 2 in the afternoon, 12 hours of sleep.

I don't get how people get 7+ hours of sleep and get good grades and do all the extracurriculars they say that they do...
For me, I get home usually not before 6:00. I shower, do some chores and stuff like making dinner, waste time on IM/TV/phone, sometimes fall asleep, do stuff for service activities, student council, newspaper, etc, then get to that thing called homework... I'm a junior w/ 4 AP classes and about a 4.07 GPA, so...
Sleep varies from week to week... Last week, I didn't get more than around 3 hours Sunday-Wednesday... Usually, it's around 5... (get to bed around 2:00, up around 7:00) :-)

I go to a private school, but I am doing independent study, so I guess some would consider it "homeschooling." Though it isn't really.

Sleep hours: LOL, I average about 6 every night, which I know makes little sense, but I have a tendency to read into the night or study extra for AP exams, since I am totally stressing out aout them. So yeah, sometimes it is b/c of school that I don't get sleep, but I don't mind it. ;)

Grades: Currently have 4.3 weighted GPA, 4.0 unweighted. And it isn't a homeschool inflation thing as some people call it, because I actually attend a college prep school where I receive grades and am assigned papers and projects, etc.

Good poll ;)

once i'm back from school, i usually have some activity or the other to attend.I am usually home for the day at 6. i rest for some time/watch TV/music/chat on the phone...i mean i'm human for god's sake! after this i am too tired to do anything...it's like my brain just switches off!
so i end not completing homeworks and worrying like mad.I guess i am an OK student, if i had more energy i could do better. I am in the IB program which makes my situation EVEN worse!!
anyone else out there with the same symptoms??

let's see... i always have at least 7.5 hours a sleep per night. 3.5 gpa, 1120 sat score
my extra curriculars contributed also. track & cross-country, key club, b.s.o., student government, plenty of office positions and can't forget church activities. all i know is that the top ranking students at my school have 2 hours of sleep, 4.0+ gpa's, no social life and rings around their eyes.

I get 5-6 hours a night and have a 3.8 gpa. I'm training myself to sleep as little as possible and still be productive. It is probably horrible for a growing body, but I could care less. When I graduate college in the distant future I will be working 80 hours a week and will probably sleep between the hours of 2 and 5 a.m.

took Math through Multivariable calc by Junior year, and AP Physics same year, currently senior, going to attend U of Chicago! Hardly ever try hard for grades!

Oh yeah, never gotten a B in math or physics, (thats, AP Calc BC, AP stats, AP Physics, Physics regular, pre-calc, Multivariable Calc, Alg. II, Alg. I, Geometry, all of which i took on or before Junior year) All the other classes out there don't count(on a personal level) and they all suck! Including AP Bio and the AP BIO exam two days ago!, have the AP gov't exam in 6 hours!

I just found this website and it is so cool cause i now can exchange ideas and opinions with people that are like me! My school sucks, Avg. SAT for school 740(cumulative), GPA Avg. 1.98!

All u people in here with extremely high GPA's and low SATs, sorry but u suck cause all of the hard work only prepares u for things like standardized exams so i don't see how u can screw up ur SATs if u have a 4.0 plus. Either u suck or ur school is too easy. U people here with high SATs and extremely low GPAs, u rock! cause u are all brave examples of how u don't have to do stupid homeworks and school crap to be smart! Wish i did the same thing as y'all but wasn't willing to gamble.

And if i had a college, i would accept anyone with 1400 plus if I know that they really did get the scores!

oh yeah, last but not least, affirmative action doesn't work!(I know cause i am black and didn't get into MIT, but my sorry essay and Interview might be reasons for rejection), so on that note, DO NOT do interviews when they are optional unless u are extremely well prepared and u know that u will present urself in an amazingly impressive fashion!

On a 4.0 scale, an A is a 4, a B is a 3, etc. In some schools, an A-, A, and A+ have slightly different GPA's but I don't know exactly what they are, because my school doesn't do that (luckily.=) AP and Honors classes at my school are weighted on a 5.0 scale, with A's being a 5.

Hope that helps.

I've been in 2 high schools this year- one was a highly-competitive college prep, the other a regular suburban school.
For the college prep, I got usually 3-4 hours of sleep due to excessive amount of homework and ranked 1/130.
In the regular suburban high school, I received around 6-7 hours of sleep and am 1/315. In this case, it's not usually because of schoolwork but rather I chose to stay up late on my own. My goal is to get 9 hours of sleep per night at the least.

oh yeah, and in the fall, i run XC (i also do indoor and outdoor track, but XC is ten times more important to me) so I usually get like 9 hours of sleep during the week during XC season so i can run well. I know what you mean, Hukddonfoniks, I did outdoor track this year, but AP tests were going on at the same time and i cracked. I didn't even make regionals this year. Last school year (sophomore in HS), I'd say I got around 7-8 hours of sleep on the weekdays, and around 9-10 hours on the weekends. I never really felt pressured to pull an all-nighter and study - even on the days before finals, SAT IIs and my AP. Still though I think I went through fairly well, with good grades (got my final grades back today). Also, I stressed out about stuff very rarely, making it an enjoyable year.

Next year will be different.

>how would you compare the 4.0 scale and like the >90s scale?

Not sure... I think:
97-100 4.3
93-96 4.0
90-92 3.7
87-89 3.3
83-86 3.0
80-82 2.7

etc...

>also do you ppl sleep so little because of >school? High school is not that difficult.

I think it varies a lot from school to school. Some have lots of work, some don't...

>Im not trying to sound mean or anything but it >just isnt that difficult. I also take APs. I >sleep about 6-8 hours on weekdays but its not >because of school. Its because I'm watching Tv >or something. Wow i feel like a slacker.

In my school, each AP is 1-2 hours of hw if you have time to do it well. With 4 AP classes this year and 5 exams, I screwed up US by not doing reading (Did fine gradewise (A-, 4), but feel I didn't do as much as I should have)

>Many of you pull all nighters and stuff for >school. I sleep 8 hours and still need coffee ?>please classes are so boring they put you to >sleep, but coffee helps.

Yep... Some all nighters... I'm sleepy in class sometimes... been known to nap through some history movies and study halls

>How many hours do you guys study for SATII and SATs.

not many... maybe a few hours the days before

>I will be studying for SATII chem and math IIc
>(i pretty much know everything already) but i >need to get my SAT I score up by i dont know 200.
>How much do u think i should study over the >summer?

Relax, enjoy yourself...

>Verbal section is my problem. Math is already 800.

Congratz on math! Verbal--do some practice tests, some reading, maybe learn some roots or vocab.

>Please help! How should i set up my studying >schedule ( keep in mind i also have classes >3hours) weekdays and volunteering? HElp HElp ?
>please.

I'm really the last person to ask. I'm the one who spends so much time volunteering and doing other activities that I rarely get home before 6:00. I have a lot of home responsibilities.... By the time I start homework, often 9:00. End up staying up often 'til 4:00 or 5:00 AM and getting up at 7:00. Thus, I don't think I'm the one to give you advice about a sane schedule. :-)

Hey guys!

During the school year I get 2 1/2 hours of sleep a night. (I'm not sure how I did it either!)

I have a 4.43 GPA, straight A's in the 95-100 range in all honors and AP courses. I was in only 1 out of 2 AP classes that my school offered, but nonentheless, my school has a really demanding program. I took honors pre-cal, Spanish 4, chem, and English, and AP US History. I was also in psychology and the child development programs at my school. However, it wasn't the AP that kept me up; it was pre-cal and chem because I struggle like crazy with anything math related! It's because I "learn differently" and by rights, should not be in honors math or science anything, but I've been able to prove that I can handle it; I just have to work a lot harder.

With that said, I am 3 or 4 in a class of 310. I also am active in many extracurriculars, including :
*editor of my school newspaper
*National Honor Society Secretary
*student representative to Board of Education
*volunteer at an elementary school as a tutor/ teacher's aide
*active student council member, leading blood drives, toy/food drives, dances, other school sponsored events, etc.
*Art, Spanish, Science National Honor Societies
*Lead in school play
*Cheered and played tennis but had to stop due to a severe wrist injury that is still in need of surgury.
*Wil begin a part-time job next week and will also begin pre-pointe ballet lessons.
*Baby-sat for many, many kids since I was 12... just thought I should include that.

SAT Math-610 (Hey, I am probably somehow math learning disabled. Getting that score was a real struggle, but I still hope I can improve it because I know its going to hold me back a lot.)
SAT verbal- 680 (could go up, but I know I can improve it next testing administration)
SAT US History-720
SAT Math IC- 560 (calculator broke in the middle of the testinG! But I'm sure it wouldn't have been much better anyway)
Writing-660

Ooo boy... what else? Oh yeah... unlike a lot of other people who I know that are at the top of their class, I know that this is probably really looked down upon but lets just say I have a really big social life. LOL. Maybe this will keep me from getting into Harvard, but I know I have had an awesome high school career academically, and extracurricularly- and I have managed to have a great time too with my friends.

Wow, last year I was a freshman, and discovered that I had ADD so I did not do so hot in the Pre IB programme. I was in 5 PIB classes and 2 band classes. I would get maybe 5 hours if I was REALLY lucky, but mostly I got between 2 and 3 hours of sleep a night. Sometimes I'd be up all night putting of those damned assignments. My GPA? *shudder* 2.93 W. Band took up my days during the first semester (because of football season) and the fact that I had to stay at school until 5pm every day during the second semester (no ride, and some band practice) took up quite a lot of time. Also, spent 6-7 hours at orchestra practice every weekend. Pre IB was a joke, and most of my teachers were jokes...thus explaining why 75 of us barely pulled Cs.
