I'm trying to look for poetry or short story contests that are legit and look good on college applications. I love writing both, so I thought I would try to put it to good use, heh. I know that there are a lot of fake ones out there, (the ones that require you to pay them, etc) so I was wondering if anyone knew of some good contests?

Off the top of my head, two very good competitions are the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (short stories i believe, though there may be a poetry divisions as well) and the Library of Congress River of Words (poems about water). Both of these are very prestigious, especially the second one, and thus are also very hard to win. There are also plenty of local/statewide contests that are probably easier to win. I'd ask your english teacher if they know of any or run some web searches. Good luck!

Oh, may I ask if there are essay/short story/or poetry contests that are well-recognized in the United States that foreign Americans can participate in as well?
(Our schools does the Voice of Democracy essay contest, but I would like to know more international ones if there's any.)
Thanks.
