how does your high school calculate GPA?

1-5 or 1-4 or percent system used?

AP's worth 5? or 4.5? or what?

honors courses curved?

weighted, or non weighted?

personally, my school gives us a number grade 0-100. no weighting anything, not even APs. in addition, eighth grade courses are counted on the transcript because they are considered "high school level" for accelerated studeents....

By Volley17 (Volley17) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 09:04 pm: Edit

Being in CA, our school can only weigh the official GPA if the course is allowed to be weighed by UC. Basically, all APs and Honors Chemistry and Honors Physics are on a 5 point scale while everything else is on a 4 point scale.

By Vegangirl (Vegangirl) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 09:53 pm: Edit

4 point scale with honors (called "X" or accelerated classes) and AP weighted at 5.2.

No high school credit is given for high school classes taken in middle school, and I don't believe any appear on transcripts. However, if you take Algebra 1 in 8th grade the district only requires two years of math in high school (algebra 2 and geometry). Good deal, though you probably *should* take more than two years, it's nice to know you don't have to!

100 point scale. Failing is 75.

Honors are weighted 1.05

AP classed are weighted 1.07

So It is possible for someone to have a 107 average (If, of course they take all AP classes and get 100s in all of them.)

My school uses the 1-4 system, all of it is unweighted since we don't have APs or Honors courses. Highest you can get is a 4.0!

By Laceycheer (Laceycheer) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 03:31 pm: Edit

Regular... A= 4.0
Honors... A= 4.25
PreAP... A= 4.5

my school has no official gpa or ranking system...the school only computes the gpa when kids are applying for the cum laude society...other than that, it doesn't say on your report card.

100 points scale. add 7 points for each honor class / ap class to our numerical averages... so usually the valecdictorians have a 104 or something. Yeah, it's retarded. But I live in Georgia, and grades are inflated to try to get the Hope Scholarship (everyone instate who goes to a state school gets free tuition as long as they have an 80 average)

By Riz (Riz) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 07:46 pm: Edit

All classes are out of 100 points. My school doesn't believe in weighting grades.

I don't think we determine valedictorian by average alone.

By Charliez (Charliez) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 09:44 pm: Edit

At my school, its a 1-4 system.
*Normal:
-A=4
-B=3
-C=2
-D=1
-F=0
*AP:
-A=5
-B=4
-C=3
-D=2
-F=1?(not sure)

We also have another type of Class called IB (International Bacculoreate). Its like twice as hard as AP. It's kind of new and not many colleges know about it though.
*IB:
-A=5
-B=4
-C=3
-D=2
-F=1 (?)

well, gotta go study for my AP Euro midterm now.... :-)

By Laceycheer (Laceycheer) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 05:03 pm: Edit

...Um you think alot of colleges dont know about IB????????

By Muzicgal04 (Muzicgal04) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 06:32 pm: Edit

sardonic and jay, I want your grading scale!!! Ours is 4.0 for cp (college prep) 4.5 for honors, 5 for AP

and trust me charliez, MOST colleges know about IB and treat it on par (if not superior) to the AP program

By Monekit (Monekit) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 09:54 pm: Edit

Regular classes = not weighted
Honor classes = not weighted
AP classes = weighted by 1.00

GPA system: Uses a 1-4 system (AP classes may cause it to go over a 4.0)

By Insanity (Insanity) on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 11:02 pm: Edit

I'm from Pa

My school uses a percentage system for grades and grades are weighted for the purpose of class rank.
Honors courses are weighted at 1.08 * grade
Academic courses are weighted at 1.04
AP courses are weighted at 1.1
All other courses are weighted at 1.0
An A is 93-100%
B is 86-92%
C is 78-85%
D is 70-77%
0-69% = failing

By Gameguy56 (Gameguy56) on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 01:08 am: Edit

same old 4.0 scale

A=4
B+=3.25
B=3
and so on

For AP classes add .06 to gpa, for Honors add .04

I've never had the pleasure of taking an honors or AP course (helllo! technical school!) so i couldnt tell you what the grading scale is. I've heard it does change, though. The valedictorian at my cousins graduation had like a 6.4 or 6 somthing. So it must. But I know the regular grading scale is as follows:

100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-60 D
below 60 F

Which is a lot better than it used to be. Up until about 2 years ago it was only a 5 point difference in each range instead of 10. I.E: only a 95-100 = A.

And btw this is for hillsborough county fl

ok i'm another Pennsylvanian and I have AP, Honors, and IB in my school along with regular courses. I'm looking to go to college next year and i was talking with my guidance counselor about my GPA and what it's based on because I am in full IB (going for the IB diploma). Apparently, things have been changing since my freshmen year, when everything used to be on the 4.0 scale. As of last year, we were on the 5.0 scale for IB, AP, and Honors (or honors may have been 4.5). Supposedly, to my dismay and confusion, we're finally landing upon a 6.0 scale with regular at 5.0 and honors with 5.5. Hence, I found this message board while looking for how to determine my GPA on the 6.0 scale. Any links to charts is much appreciated
