Is it bad to put this down? I've heard this and I'm not sure whether this is just a myth or not

It's fine... the most common major of admitted students is usually "undecided." So clearly, you can put down "undecided" and get in.

I wouldn't recommend. But it really depends on the schools to which you are applying...

It's totally fine to put down undecided if you are! Most students apply as undecided freshmen.

Some schools don't even require you to declare a major until the beginning or end of your sophomore year. However, if you want to apply to specialized schools, being undecided generally isn't a good thing.
