Looking for info on boarding school summer programs such as exeter, andover, choate or st. georges. Am I missing any? Anybody been and can relate your experience? Do you think this would have any bearing on your possible admission in a following year? thanks for any help!!

Cushing Academy has a pretty good one ;)

I know Hotchkiss does also, but I believe its only in music and environmental science, couldn't really back that statement up though.

anybody with any opinions?

I didn't personally go, but I know a couple of kids who did. It didn't hurt their applications certainly, but I don't know if it exactly helped them either, except providing evidence that they're academically motivated. They're probably best for getting an idea of what life at that school would be like.

Bamagirl, What year were you when you went? How stressful were the classes and which did you take and recommend? Did you have plenty of free time? Were the field trips fun? I just got the catalog and it looks great. Anything you can tell me would be much appreciated. Were the kids "normal"? Thanks alot.

i went the summer after 8th grade (2000). i took latin, algebra and post wwII europe. there were tons of awesome classes that i would have loved to have taken but there were pre requsites that i didnt have. there was a lot of free time and you could do with it as you please, but i had about 3 hours of homework a night. the trips looked awesome, but the only one i went on was the one to the mall. the only down side, and it wasnt that bad was thast you have to check in to the dorms by 9 on weeknights and midnight on weekends. i went with my best friend and her older brother and we are about as normal as you can get, and my roommates were very down to earth. if you have any more questions, i'll be glad to anwser them.

Bamagirl

Why didn't you take more trips? Did the summer experience make you want to go to boarding school in the fall? Why didn't you go back the next summer? Thanks for all your insight.

i dont know why i didnt take more trips. you had to have parental permission for the sat. trips into boston and i was only 13 at the time so my parents didnt let me go. it kind of sucked. my parents offered to send me to PEA for school, but i was happy at the school i was attending at the time. looking back, i wish i had gone to PEA or some other boarding school. i didnt go back for a second summer because: 1. it is kind of expensive and 2. my parents wanted me to expierence other programs. the mext summer i spent in montreal with family , the summer ater that i attended the national youth leadership forum on medicine and last summer, i attended a 3 week session at brown university.

thanks bamagirl, two last questions, just how hard were the classes? I want to take latin, geometry and maybe debate. I have no background in latin. also, did you look at andover or choate's program and if so why exeter over the other two? Thanks, you are most helpful!!

i also had no background in latin or any foreign language for that matter and i still passed the course. the classes were difficult, except for algebra, and they required alot of homework and preparation. latin was the hardest for me. i spent about 2 hours a night doing translations. i never looked at andover's or choate'sprograms, but my roomate from korea had two friends at the andover program and they seemed to be enjoying it. i hope you decide to attend. it was one of the best expeirences of my life! you can email or im anymore questions you have. my email is in my profile and my aim is the same as my email.
