Ok, I have a detention tomorrow for not wearing my nametag. We have to wear these things on lanyards! On our necks!!! LIKE CATTLE!
Will this show up on my records for colleges??? AND HOW SHOULD I PROTEST THESE???

By Infamousx (Infamousx) on Wednesday, December 03, 2003 - 05:40 pm: Edit

They won't show up on your transcripts...

By Texas137 (Texas137) on Wednesday, December 03, 2003 - 05:41 pm: Edit

Actually, if it was like cattle, they would have it permanently attached by punching it through your ear.

If wearing the nametag at all times is a school rule, then you probably won't be able to do anything about your detention. But you can take up a student petition or contact the ACLU or something to try to change the rule for the future.

I doubt if you'll succeed in changing the rule. This sounds like one of those paranoid security measures in response to some problem involving non-students on campus. You have to lump it in with searching student lockers, metal detectors, locked front doors, and patrolling the halls with drug-sniffing dogs. Schools rarely back off voluntarily on those sorts of things once they're instituted, because of potential liability if something bad happens and they haven't done everything possible to assure student safety.

One detention is not going to have any affect on your college apps. Lots of schools hand those out for the most trivial infractions. Don't worry unless you get expelled, arrested at school, or otherwise labelled a serious trouble-maker.

I have a big mouth and get detentions all the time. Luckily I know how far to push the envelope -- i.e. how far I can take it without getting suspended. None of this has showed up on my record, so don't worry! Like Texas said, as long as you aren't suspended or expelled, it's all good.

Dont worry about a detention at all. They really carry no weight except to "make you think about what you did wrong." At my old school they would hand them out for things like not getting your parent to sign something on time--hence, they have 0 importance.

By Raindrops (Raindrops) on Thursday, December 04, 2003 - 05:55 am: Edit

There isn't much for you to worry about if that is the only detention you've ever experienced. Your school sounds like me, however; I got a detention for a toothpaste stain on my tie.

By Nyu2010 (Nyu2010) on Thursday, December 04, 2003 - 05:32 pm: Edit

Well no, this isn't the first detention I've ever experienced. I have had three since frosh year--all for going out into the hallway without my nametag on...:( Don't schools send out a discipline report or something though?

By Texas137 (Texas137) on Thursday, December 04, 2003 - 07:30 pm: Edit

3 detentions for minor infractions since freshman year are not going to cause a bad discipline report.

(I have to wonder, though, why you're continuing to "forget" your nametag when you know that your school's administration has a rod up their rear about this particular thing. Is your first name by any chance Mahatma?)

Ahaha! This is just hilarious. Is your school in urban LA? WTF? nametags on a lanyard?

On the other hand, some ppl at my school (which doesn't have any such rule) do like to wear these or tuck one end of the lanyard in their pants pockets to look cool. Actually, they don't have IDs on the hanging end, though. Instead, they try to attach as many keys (cars, house, cabinet, etc) as possible.

This reminds me of my middle school. I remember each morning, right when kids got off the bus, couple "administrators," with no more than one eye open, see that you had something around your neck. After missing 2 times, you got written up during lunch. After a while, I got sick of it and a geek I am, I replicated 5-6 ids on my printer. Call it forgery-- but I responded in same ridiculing way they ridiculed students in the morning.

I remember quite few mornings when friends of mine forgot their id and borrowed one of mine(with my pic, name etc. on it) and got through. ALL the administrators cared was you had something around your neck.

Oh and another thing, the guy who kept records of how many you missed I remember had a Microsoft Access file saved openly on the network-wide public student hard drive so if I wanted to, with couple clicks that could have disappeared.

Needless to say, the system did not last that long. After 3-4 months, they gave up.

Dude, what is up with your schools? Detention for forgetting a name tag? For a TOOTHPASTE STAIN?? Really? Are you kidding me? lol. Maybe I still don't know much about the world, cause in my school, such strictness is unheard of. Man, I'm glad I don't go to your school...x_x

By Nyu2010 (Nyu2010) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:04 pm: Edit

Yeah, my school is crazy. And no, it's not in LA, it's in hick town PA. AND THERE IS NO CRIME HERE WHATSOEVER....so that's why I don't wear mine, it's like a silent protest.

Oh, and we also have a whole band of school district cops...the Rent-A-Cops...hahaa, they are just janitors who got hired to be school district police....I swear, I'm the most anti-my school district person ever.

Headhoncho----how do you replicate name tags?? You gave me an idea....

my school is even worse, we get written up if we they do an i.d. check and the i.d. is bent

By Iceman370 (Iceman370) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 02:12 am: Edit

dangit, NYU, sounds like they have you whipped! you're too worried about these worthless detentions, and you should stand up for yourself. we live in a democracy (I know, it never seems like it), and if there's a large majority of students who are unhappy with these things, or feel that they're pointless (they are), then you should do something about it. best way to go about stuff like this is to cause a big stink. petiton about it, organize a protest (it'll be forced to stop, because you have to have PERMISSION to protest), and maybe even meet with your principal and administrators if you have the guts. this usually draws negative attention, and the schools hate that.

p.s. odds are you WILL lose, but hey, at least you annoyed them as much as their nametags did you.

By Number9 (Number9) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 05:20 pm: Edit

Our school is in the middle of nowhere, and they are probably going to give us IDs next year (or even next semester). They already have the teachers wearing them.

They look stupid as hell, I'm going to petition against them. There is no use for them.

By Nyu2010 (Nyu2010) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 10:00 am: Edit

Yeah, I'm going to start a petition against the IDS in my school too. Of course, there are going to be a number of people in my school who say that the IDS keep them safe from "Columbine-like attacks." To this I just roll my eyes.

Number9- Are your IDS going to be on LANYARDS? Haha, whenever I tell my history teacher that I don't have my "name tag necklace," his eyes become crossed and he says, "It's a LANYARD!"
