I never hear ANYTHING about this course. From it's description below it sounds pretty easy, but I may be mistaken. If you know anything about the course please post.
"AP Statistics (Prerequisite: Algebra I)
This course is an introductory, non-calculus based college statistics course that emphasizes understanding and analyzing statistical studies. Students are expected to complete a statistical project."

Hmm...I know someone who takes this class, and she's really good at math but has trouble with it. She's also in Calc BC
Thats all I could really tell you though.

I found it rather easy.

i've heard the course is relatively easy for the mathematically inclined. it sounds interesting to me...my school doesn't offer it though.

It's odd how people find the course hard and how it's an AP course yet the only prerequisite is Algebra I.

Statistics isn't really math. I'd say 50% of it is common sense. If you don't mind reading a little bit and thinking instead of using a simple formula for everything, stats is a breeze.

This class is also referred to as "Common Sense." If you have common sense, you can easily pass stats.

I get AP Credit for using common sense...sounds fine to me.

Stats is extremely easy... I took a non-AP stats class last year (junior)... never payed attn, did my hw for other classes during it, never studied... easiest A+ ever. In May, I studied a few days for the AP and got a 5... so yeah. :-)

Well just how good are you at math, Smiley? What math are you in now? O:-)

Stat's, in the mathematical aspect, is applied Algebra 1. However, there is some thinking, checking and common "statistical" sense involved which might not be too keen to those formulaic mathematicians out there. That said, after the first quarter of Stats, along with a full AP schedule, I managed the second highest grade in the class (a fraction of a percentage below the valedictorian). I did 70-80% of the homework, aced the quizzes and aced the tests. I'd say go for it. If you grasp it, you'll grasp it the whole year (there is a lot of repetition). Good luck and go for it.

Hmm thanks.
Math IS my worst subject, but I am now considering taking AP Statistics junior year (after Algebra II), and then taking PreCalc senior year, or just not taking PreCalc at all.

If I were you, I'd go Pre-Calc route. Pre-Calc serves as better preparation for Calc in college or possibly your Senior year. Or, if you wished, you could go with the Stats/Calc schedule your senior year- that's always fun. But definitely take Pre-Calc junior year and then Calc or Stats (Calc would be better because a 5 on the AP test is more widely accepted as Math Gen Ed requirements whereas Stats is a completely different department).

Welshie, you have to remember that Calculus is harder in highschool than it is in college. Not everyone can take that hard of a math in highschool.

I took AP stat last year, and it was pretty easy. I did well on the AP test even though my teacher was slightly incompetent- she didn't have a statistics background and didn't really want to be teaching the class. Some of it is kind of interesting, but there really isn't that much material to cover so it gets a little boring. At least we didn't have much homework. You only need basic math skills- we used calculators (TI-83+s) a lot and on the AP test, its more about common sense and knowing what statistical tests to apply- how to use and interpret data.

Could I do fine if it if I just completed Algebra I and Geometry?
| By And1hoops (And1hoops) on Friday, December 12, 2003 - 10:05 pm: Edit |
IT all depends on what kind of a stats teacher you have, my teacher was very senile and strict when it came to stats which made the class the hardest AP in the school, although the material was easy enough, difference in teacher grading matters alot. I found if u have a good teacher the class is cake, its easy to get a 5, i hadabout an hr to sleep during the AP test. yet no1 in my class got an A first trimester so yes all depends on teacher

Consider Statistics another writing class, add in a bit of math here and there, but mostly reading and writing and hum oh yeah, the formulas and applying it.

I'm curious why so many people have C's in it. I guess they just have no logic or common sense.
