hey Rokko, I live in NY, how do I sign up for that, and/or get a recommendation for it,
| By Anothersuitcase (Anothersuitcase) on Sunday, November 02, 2003 - 08:03 pm: Edit |
You don't sign up for it or get a recommendation for it either.
If you want to join it, then you join the Model UN club at your school. If your school doesn't have it, try to get a teacher who's willing to sponser one.

SOMEONE EXLPAIN WHAT MODEL UN IS... COULD IT BE STARTED AT MIDDLE SCHOOL?
| By Caramelapple (Caramelapple) on Sunday, November 30, 2003 - 05:34 pm: Edit |
Oh my gosh... you're in middle school?!?! What are you doing on a college board?? Go away and don't worry about college!! I didn't even know what college was when I was in middle school (okay... exaggeration)!!
Anyway I've done MUN before and absolutley loved it but there's no club at my school. We're in the middle of no where so it'd be kind of hard. I'm going into international relations too.

I'm in MUN this year. I'm not sure if the curriculum is the same at all schools though. I joined this year and I'm really enjoying it! All I know is that we went to New York last year and won out of all the schools there (though I didn't go personally, but I was really proud of all who did). :D

Jees Caramelapple! First off, Forget what Caramel said about forgetting about college. Middle school is very important. It sets the course for High School, especially the last two years of MS. First , and hope fully your in seventh grade so you can take advantage of the Duke Talent Identification Program. You have to live in one of the following states:Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Texas. If you do then ask your mom or dad to talk with your couselor and see if s/he can set up an appointment to take one of the approved tests. A list of them is available at the program website:http://www.tip.duke.edu/TS/7TS.htm . This is an awesome bona fide program. Second in 8th grade really start considering your highschool choices. Depending on the options available to you in your school district, It can almost be as tough a choosing a college. Private schools and academys, Magnet Programs, and traditonal settings; are all somthing you'll have to think about. Think you like a school, See if they have a shadowing program. Find out as much as you can especially about day-to-day stuff. Is it a block or traditional schedule. Will you have a course of study to follow and what are your options/ how many credits do you have to do for each one. As for extra curiculars, I know at my middle school there simply werent alot of options. This may differ at your school though. Talk to your guidence counselor a lot during 8th grade and of course study and keep those grades up.
Ps: to answer your question, Model UN is an extracurricular that has many students come together to form a a scaled down "model" united nations. where each student acts as a mock representative of a certain country. Check out http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/index.asp for more info.
Hope I helped
P. A.

just to add to what singergirl said, other regions of the country have their own "talent searches" for middle school students. The others are located at Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and the University of Denver. So if you don't live in one of the states she named, run a search on one of these

Model United Nations is an international "club" that simulates the workings of the real United Nations. The United Nations is divided into committees, and in Model UN, you are placed in one of these committees, by yourself or with a partner, and you represent a country. The goal is to debate with other "countries" to come to a solution on a certain world issue. For example, if you are in the Disarmament and Security Committee, you might debate nuclear weapons, if you're in the Committee on the Status of Women, you might debate Women and Islam. Etc. There are also simulations of various other organizations tied with the UN, such as the World Bank, or the World Health Organization. These conferences are sponsored by various organizations and colleges. Most of the top colleges have a Model UN conference, along with their own Model UN team, as it isn't only for the high school level, but the collegiate level. There are college conferences as well. The size of a conference might range from 200 people to 3000 people. Then, awards are usually given out, such as Honorable Mention, Distinguished Delegate, Position Paper Award, and Best Delegate. Then, if your entire school team has performed exceptional, you can win the Delegation Award, where your school gets a trophy. It's a really cool club, esp. if you're interested in International Relations. My school has been doing it for about 13 years, and we've won numerous awards at national conferences, and won at an international conference held at the Hague. I've won awards at the North American Invitational Model UN conference sponsored by Georgetown University, MOdel UNited Nations of the UNiversity of Chicago, my district conference, and delegation awards at Rutgers, NAIMUN, and National High School MUN. I am also Under Secretary General of Administrative Affairs of the 2004 Intra-District(we have 5 schools in our district) conference. It looks REALLY good for college, and I'm hoping to continue at whichever college I get into(preferably Cornell or Georgetown).

Every year at my school the entire sophomore class does a MUN at my school. It is one of the largest projects of a student's high career. I represented Uzbekistan and enjoyed myself immensely.
Most of our UN consisted of proposing various resolutions and debating/ammending them. What are other things that high school MUNs do?
