Hi.
My friend told me that she is working as a counselor at a day camp this summer but isn't getting paid. In fact, she has to pay to work there. She said that this counts as volunteer work/community service. Is this true? If you work at a camp but don't get paid can you add this to your community service number of hours?
Thanks.

For non-profit organization yes.

But isn't a day camp a profit organization? For instance, I worked as a CIT at a camp teaching kids how to play tennis, and I didn't get paid. Was I volunteering?

Hmm... you shouldn't worry about it... because when you apply to colleges... you don't say "community services -- 230 hours." Rather you divide it up into different activities. So just say "Volunteered at day camp -- 80 hours" or something w/o specifying if that's community services or not =)

Thanks for your quick response, Serene. That means I have about 250 hours of volunteering for this camp!

I'm a rising senior and have a grand total of 3 hours community service!! Exactly how important is it!?
