Hi there...I'm thinking of attending a summer program the summer before junior year. What good (and preferably competitive) summer programs do you recommend? My interests are history, art, law, basically the humanities.

See if your state has a governor's program

Do Harvard SSP. They have over 50 different courses to choose from, and you earn real college credit. As far selectivity goes, acceptance is about 1 in 4. I am at Harvard doing the program right now, it's great. I strongly encourage you to attend.

I can't attend the Harvard SSP next summer because it's only for students who will have completed junior/senior year and I'll just be a sophomore next year. But I'm considering it for next next summer.

I don't think Illinois has a governor's program...

I'm thinking of going to the University of Chicago (it has an urbanology course that I'm very interested in) or Cornell...and for non-university programs, maybe Phillips Andover or Phillips Exeter summer sessions? I want to know more about them...please share any comments...

Thanks for all the suggestions so far...

Stanford has an "Institutes" program that I know very little about. This is what I do know:

* They are younger students (not yet juniors, most of them)
* They come for 3 weeks of a particularly theme class
* They work A LOT
* They're pretty atypical of quiet smart kids

I'm sure looking it up under Stanford's summer sessions would provide more information. :)
