I have read that many people have their works published in a science journal or something of that sort, and I was wondering how good that will look for colleges. Also, what kinds of things would you research because without high tech equipment that would be extremely difficult.

try getting a mentor at a university lab. I have a very good research scientist as my mentor for my independent project which deals with cystic fibrosis. All I did was go through two phone calls: I phoned the lab, and the person there referred me to my mentor after I described what I would like to work on.
