so a "friend" of mine took honors chemistry in 10th grade, passed first semester, and got a D second semster.

she retook second semester regular chem in 11th grade and got a D again.

she tried really hard, and doesn't understand any of the material.

she does just fine in physics and biology however. she's also in calculus for next fall.

can she get into college with a D in chem?

she doesn't want to do anything math or science related in her future.

Well...my advice for your "friend" is to try to make up for the D by shing in other areas, especially other subjects and ECs. If she wants to attend an Ivy league or other top school, then the D will really hurt. If she's aiming for a second tier/state school, then her chances are better, but again, a D is never good on a transcript.

ooh...>< 11th grade...not good.
never mind, i'm sure your friend can make up for it. Don't have her lose hope or she'll be really screwed over.

At least that D is not an F or "U" (Unsatisfactory grade). I have friends who failed Chemistry when they took it in the 10th grade, and failed it again when they had to repeat it in the 11th. To top it off, they want to major in Pre-Med in college and go to medical school. Of course, I like to think that anything is possible if you work hard at it.
But I think your friend should try to take the class again if possible, or at least try to demonstrate some competency in chemistry. Chemistry is one of the most fundamental science courses of a pre college curriculum.
