Hi,
Lots of people are talking about summer programs and such like and I was just wondering whether or not anyone was getting a job this summer? If so, have you started looking yet? Where are you working? Looking forward to it?
Just curious!

I have a job! My family and I have a lawn business that I have been working at for the past 6 and a half years! It's loads of fun (besides the farmers tan lol). Helps build character, responsibility, and looks good on the apps (especailly cuz by the time i apply it will be over 7 years). Pick jobs that are fun, not because of the money. You don't want a $7 job that you just absolutely wanna kill yourself for. Do something that strikes your fancy! Good luck.

I am doing construction over the summer. I will be applying to Ivy leagues and most of my fellow applicants will be interning and going to school over the summer (gasp!), but I cant complain with $500 a week plus valuable knowledge in basic carpentry.

I’m going to be a counselor at a Girl Scout camp:) It’s better then sitting around all summer. Plus I have an extra long summer so I still have time to take a vacation and stuff.

how long are all of your summers? Mine is extremely short! from june 13 to like august 19!!!! I better get out extra early next year as a senior (but since my school is weird i probably will get out like june 10 lol)

I work PT during school at an ice rink in guest services (basically ice guarding, door check...)
When I get back from JSA I will be working more hours but we have a short summer too. I'm also taking some courses online for credit.

How do you FIND a good job? I have no clue how to go about finding a different, interesting job. Agh! And there are so many qualified people out there. *tears out hair*

I am a rising junior in college and you guys are doing the right thing by getting jobs. Since you will be working for the rest of your lives anyway you might as well start now. And be sure to get jobs during the summers that you are in college. I go to Cornell and a lot of students take classes over the summer but I would rather earn some money.

I had to get a job the day I turned 16, I help out with the family expenses. Hopefully next summer I will get to start coaching...good money ...anywhere from 50-60 an hour. My parents use to pay my Olympic coach 145 an hour...now my Mom says she wants me to use that great skating pedigree to earn some cash for college and my high cost of maintenance LOL!

This Summer I will be working at the Erikson Biographical Institute, a great job for a going-to-be highschool Senior. We survey colleges and compile Reports that rank them in a ton of different ways. Plus my boss taught at both Harvard and Brown, so I am hoping for some connections when application time comes. Anyway, if you guys are interested check out www.biographical.org

Summer lasts from June 2nd till August 18th! Too short!

By Crnchycereal (Crnchycereal) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 12:26 pm: Edit

Are you kidding me!? You get off from June 2nd till August 18th! We got out on the 23rd of June and we end on September 5th! You have 4 days off longer than we do! Don't complain! You also let out earlier so you don't have to suffer as much by having to be in school in hot weather!

By Jollyapplepie (Jollyapplepie) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 02:52 pm: Edit

I have a job! & I get paid for it too :) Too bad they don't give me much work, since I'm still a high school student (working along side college students). Umm ... I guess I'd probably say that if your still a Freshman/Sophomore focus more on volunteering unless you have hundreds of hours under your belt already.

By Sirmoreau (Sirmoreau) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 03:06 pm: Edit

Ashley - Did you know someone to get that job with Goldman Sachs? Just curious, because I had no idea they were highering internships (or whatever it is you're doing) w/ high school students.

By Kewkiekid (Kewkiekid) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 08:23 pm: Edit

i've been trying to get a job for a year and a half now. no one wants to higher high school kids in my area. i'm probably gonna go volunteer at the library b/c there's nothing else to do, and i can always use a little more community service.

my break is 10 weeks, i've been off 1 1/2 weeks and i'm already so bored, i can't WAIT to go back to school.

By Elazar (Elazar) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 10:19 pm: Edit

I got a job! Today was my first day, and it was awsome! I work as an apprentence artist at gallery 37 ( a program run by the city of chicago for artistic youth.) I'm doing furniture painting.

By Crnchycereal (Crnchycereal) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 10:24 pm: Edit

I got a job at Shoprite and the training sucks ass. The computer program they use is SO long and SO boring and I have to memorize about 500 produce codes...it's ridiculous. Even worse, I'm leaving for a program at Brown on July 20, so I'm gonna work there for less than two full weeks! ARGH! I NEED MORE MONEY THAN THAT!
