any big deal?
By Jenniferelaine (Jenniferelaine) on Thursday, April 24, 2003 - 10:13 pm: Edit
It's just like being on the National Honor Roll.
Nothing to it. And just about everyone who applies to upper-tiered colleges is in it.

>>It's just like being on the National Honor Roll.
What?! NHR is practically handed out to every sophomore. Its a giant scam too.
The NHS is something real. It is treated as a big deal at my school, even though it is pretty easy to get into if you keep good grades and the teaching staff likes you.
Sure, a ton of people that apply to the Ivies have been inducted into the NHS, but its still an honor!
By Jenniferelaine (Jenniferelaine) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 10:20 am: Edit
Right...NHR is a scam. But it's overlooked, just like is essentially NHS is overlooked too. It may be an honor at your school..but in the end, it's no big deal to colleges. Whoop-di-frickin-doo, you're on NHS, so am I, so is he, so is she, and so on.
By Number9 (Number9) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 10:45 am: Edit
Of course, but most colleges know NHR is a scam.
Like I said, it is an honor at my school, but something really easy to get into. They treat it as a giant ceremony and people get to leave for the rest of the day, etc.
I guess its so big because its about the only big thing my small HS has...
heh.
Now, nyugrad, if you were to hold a position in the NHS, like President, VP, etc. that would be better.
By Nyu2010 (Nyu2010) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 03:36 pm: Edit
Heh, I was on NHR in the seventh grade. And I had about...hmm...four C's?

I got the Who's Who in American High School Students today...I figure I'd send it in, but not buy a book or anything. Its not very important.
I had to laugh, at the NHS induction ceremony one girl had that on her list of acheivements.
By Apguy (Apguy) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 05:22 pm: Edit
Who's Who is a scam. The company hopes if they put a kids name in it they will buy their books. Adcoms say they won't take it seriously. Keep that in mind.
By Number9 (Number9) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 05:29 pm: Edit
Yeah, I know.
Ill just sign up, wont buy a book, and wont include it in the college applications.

It all varies, at my school NHS is huge (its a private magnet though), and as Vice-President I know that the admin is on our asses like there's nothing...integrity, honesty, nobility bla bla...it just depends on the program. Kinda sucks that its just a name though, and most ivies overlook it.
By Bkwrm98 (Bkwrm98) on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 04:30 pm: Edit
NHS is just one of the multiple organizations in my school. It's still an honor, since it requires 100 hours of "community activity," so a lot more people (40, I think) got rejected this year. The GPA requirement is pitiful, but being in NHS shows that you're really involved in the community.
By Tater (Tater) on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 08:12 pm: Edit
hahaha 100 hours of community activity. The NHS club i'm in only requires 10 hours. no wonder colleges overlook it, every NHS club is different
By Jimjunior (Jimjunior) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 11:09 pm: Edit
The NHS I'm in ( and VP of) only recomends community involvement. lol

hmm i have a 91.5 gpa with 5 ap classes as a juinor and signed up for 6 as a senior..and expecting 5 in pretty much all of them....but im not in nhs...will this hurt my application to an ivy league school??
By Ndhawk (Ndhawk) on Friday, May 02, 2003 - 04:30 pm: Edit
Hmm ours is pretty much just have an 87 average(easy) you get an app, fill it out and turn it in, and 90 percent get accepted.
By Primadonna (Primadonna) on Friday, May 02, 2003 - 05:44 pm: Edit
Ours is similar too, you have to have a 95 gpa and a set amount of community hours to apply, then once in, you have to maintain a 95 and accumulate hours...yeah we even have a "Member of the Month" program--talk about a waste of time. Honestly, I wouldn't sweat it.

To all you critics,
I wouldn't call these things scams. they dont totally lie. they just arn't that prestegious. But the way that these thing make money is NOT through the books they sell. it is through the names of applicants they sell to colleges. If you get one of these things, go for it. Then colleges have your name and you have a better chance of getting in when you apply. sure, u may get some spam but colleges will have ur name. If they have ur name for these things you have a better chance of getting in than if they dont. Just dont send them any money and it will work out for you. not sure bout what to do bout college applications, but just applying takes no time and it might work out for you in the end. Also, if the guy next to you has this and you don't, who has a better chance of getting in?

Colleges and Universities rarely aknowledge the "National Honor Roll" and "Who's Who" as an impacting determinant in admissions...please...
By Hitu (Hitu) on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 03:09 pm: Edit
welll jus so u guys know..there is a huge difference between the national honor society..and the national honor rool...the latter is a scam..where as being the the 1st one is considered to be great!
By Nutmegisle (Nutmegisle) on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 05:17 pm: Edit
Primadonna,
Aparently i didn't make my point. If Colleges have your name on file you have a better chance of getting in. Proven fact, end of story. Fill it out, send it in, not a big deal but might help a little. When it comes to college, anything helps. (And if it comes down to you and another person getting in, and you have it on ur resume while the other have nothing, you have a better chance than they do.)
By Primadonna (Primadonna) on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 06:02 pm: Edit
Couldn't agree with you more Hitu
Nutmegisle, thanks for your commentary, my opinion hasn't changed. So you know, yes, I filled it out, sent it in and it is currently on my resume, but the school that selected me blatantly aknowledged their contempt for the "NHR" (proven fact, end of story.) All that is contended is that the organization is reportedly a "scam".

Greetings all: National Honor Roll is a vanity press. You send them money; they print junk in their "commemorative yearbook." Doesn't mean a thing. Please see my posting at http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?6/35760 Hope this helps.
