I want to go to Wheaton, and would love any knowledge of the school/admissions/student life/etc. Thanks!

By Underqualified (Underqualified) on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 09:27 pm: Edit

Wheaton College (in Illinois) is a wonderful school that receives little recognition. I discovered this school on my college search and now desperately want to go there. It is a Christian LAC, and from my observation one of the few that maintains academic excellence and upholds Christian values. I always wanted to attend a Princeton or a Harvard, simply because I did not think that I could receive a quality education at a Christian college. A lot of people that I know similarly assume that a Christian college cannot also be academically *good* but I think that colleges like Wheaton dispel that myth. I visited Wheaton's beatiful campus in Illinois and was so impressed by not only the intelligence of the students but also the spiritual maturity. Any Christian looking for a solid undergrad or graduate experience should check out Wheaton, because you can get a great education and also grow spiritually so that you are prepared for this life and for the next!

Also, if anyone has any experience with Wheaton, please leave share it with me!

Does any one have any info or opinions on Wheaton?

By Jenlikewhoa (Jenlikewhoa) on Saturday, November 22, 2003 - 06:25 pm: Edit

yes, i live in naperville which is about 15 minutes away from wheaton. ive visited the campus and i thought it was beautiful. it is pretty selective however i dont think its terribly hard to get into as long as you have maybe a 3.7 and good test scores.

Did anyone apply to Wheaton College? If so, what made you apply? What is your intended major? Where are you from? and have you gotten accepted?
We need to start chatting!!!!!!!

Hey! I applied EA and was accepted as an intended interdisciplinary major (poli sci, econ, and philosophy) I'm from CA and am 98% sure I'll be attending Wheaton next year. Some reasons why I like it so much
1) it's devoutly Christian
2) academically respected
3) I really felt at home when I visited
4) the food is sooo good yet healthy (hey if you have to eat it for 4 years it needs to be good)
5) perfect size for me
6) students I met are awesome people who I would like to hang out with, lots of fun things to do without being scandalous
7)location (lots to do in chicago for weekends)

Did you apply?

By Rebeltide0024 (Rebeltide0024) on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 - 02:36 pm: Edit

EA, Accepted, from Lake Charles, Louisiana. Probably major in history or political science, minor in German or Christian education. Food is amazing.

do you think you'll go rebeltide?

By Alphachimp (Alphachimp) on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 - 07:15 pm: Edit

I dont know about Wheaton. After reading the entry in the "Insider's Guide to the Colleges", it just doesnt seem like the kind of place where one could enjoy themselves.

My cousin currently attends Wheaton. At first I was surprised that he didnt have a girlfriend, but apparently there is no such thing as a casual relationship on campus. There are strict rules as to acceptable usage of the computer system and men and women aren't allowed to go near each other in the dorms (except for certain days of the week).

As a Christian, I recognize that this kind of environment is supportive and MAY develop your faith, but my mother always brings up the same point. How are you going to minister in the world if you were educated in a cloistered community? That's why she has refused to pay for my education at either Wheaton or Grove City (where i intend to apply).

Sorry to express such a contrary viewpoint. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

By Ineedsleeep (Ineedsleeep) on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 - 07:44 pm: Edit

no, you definitly bring up a valid point. Wheaton is a unique place; it's not well-suited for a lot of people out there, just as Wesylan/Cal (on the other side of the spectrum) aren't suited for everyone. I truly think that college is a time of personal development to prepare them for the world. i see wheaton as major preparation for "the real world." However, at the same time I do think that the students at Christian colleges need to reach out to others outside of campus. if i were to attend wheaton i would definitly do one of their outreach programs to chicago on the weekends and would try to get involved with any other outreach programs. it's all about balance: attending wheaton would help facilitate the accountability, support, and fuel needed to reach out to others. with that said, you can acheive this just as well at a secular college...so, in my opinion, it comes down to where God wants to put you.

I am 100% sure that I want to go, I am just trying really hard to get the whole tuition thing in check.

Though I am sure that there are plenty of Christian kids that go through the big state universities, most of the professors in the big state universities have a field day "shocking" freshmen. Face it, college is designed to change you, and every college has an agenda. I certainly don't have a problem with the apologetics aspect of my faith, but I don't really see the point of supporting an institution with my money where the professors and administration most likely are extremely antagonistic toward my beliefs. There are very few things in life where we can choose our influences, and education is one of them. I thought about this whole "not getting a real world" aspect and it failed to be evident to me at Wheaton. I think the successes of Wheaton's alumni prove they graduate people that are plenty enough ready for the real world (For other Christian colleges, I can not say that for every one).

I hope this doesn't sound too paranoid :]

By Alphachimp (Alphachimp) on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 07:33 am: Edit

No it doesnt sound paranoid. I see your points. Certainly there are many areas of Chicago that do need ministry (I've actually heard some great stories about challenging areas of the city and Wheaton people from my cousin). I have to go, so I'll finish this later =).

By Mike (Mike) on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 01:30 pm: Edit

Wheaton is a good school and I know a friend of my dad's who graduated there. At the same time when you go to a state school you aren't suporting the school the states taxpayers are subsidizing you.

By Rebeltide0024 (Rebeltide0024) on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 10:47 pm: Edit

I understand federal and state aid is taxpayers' money ,but the rest of it is not.

hey rebeltide, are you going to turn in your deposit really early? do you think the earlier you turn it in the better dorm room etc you get?...hey also, if anyone has any info on the freshman dorms that would be great! i've heard fisher is more social and is suite-style, but smith-traber is traditional and a little more quiet...anyone heard of or know anything else?

By Jonathan0386 (Jonathan0386) on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 10:10 pm: Edit

WOW! It's good to know that other people applied!...I applied and had my interview done....I have no idea when they will reply...I am from Puerto Rico so I have never been able to visit campus? How is it?best thing of campus? worst thing?....About the dorms....is'nt fisher the only freshman dorm?....I am excited about WC even though I am debating if I will attend another school.....I do like the fact that WC is Christian yet VERY well respected!....If I do attend/get in..I am considering doing the Communications Major and the Pre-Law certificate program....and Also I am thinking if maybe doing the Interdisciplinary Studies (Communications, Political Science, and something else)....I also like the fact that I will have many of the competencies completed using my AP English score, SAT 2 Spanish, and Bible Institute grades...so that's sweet...I am hoping I get in...which leades me to ask...will they send out decisions ON APRIL or BY APRIL..meaning I could find out like in two weeks or 1 month?...One thing that is pretty cool is the Kiniseology requirement...they have martial arts, Adventure, Wilderness etc...
>>>>>>>>>>>

Ineedsleep- You said you felt at home at the campus? what made you feel like that?

Also, Are the dorms big, small, nice, ugly?

And, what things were there to do on campus?

Did you attend a service? If so, how was that?

SORRY for all the questions!..LOL

By Ineedsleeep (Ineedsleeep) on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 11:55 pm: Edit

hey! that's so cool that you're from PR...let's see when I went it was the atmosphere that made me feel welcome and the students were friendly and smart, very warm and open people....

dorms: seem pretty nice, nothing too special, but still nice (the boys dorm hall kinda smelled...the tour guide said that the guys on his floor didn't like doing laundry, hehehe)...

i hear they're building a new student center and chicago is only a train ride away

the service i attended was awesome...very traditional; a small quartet played for music and they had a speaker, as for Sunday church I went to willowcreek, sooo awesome

By Daniela5586 (Daniela5586) on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 09:50 pm: Edit

They said they would reply by April 10th, so I'm guessing it will be a little bit before then (maybe a week or so). We should keep each other posted!

I want to be an Elementary Education major, with a minor in Spanish. If I am accepted and stay for graduate school, I would get a master's in Mission and Intercultural Studies. Basically, I want to be a missionary in South America or Spain.

One of the things that excites me the most about Wheaton is the amount of ministry opportunities. From what I learned when I visited, it's impossible to be involved in all of what goes on.

I live in southern California. Maybe someday my missionary work will take me to Puerto Rico!

By Jonathan0386 (Jonathan0386) on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 11:03 pm: Edit

LOL...DANIELA...WOULD BE NICE!...PR IS NICE!

>>>>>>>>

Ineedsleep- Willow Creek sure us awesome!..My sister goes there...isnt it big?huge I should say!...Did you go to Axis or to the regular church service? Either one they are both GREAT...Axis is the Youth Service....oh and what dorm was the one that smelled?

By Ineedsleeep (Ineedsleeep) on Monday, January 19, 2004 - 01:54 am: Edit

i visited axis...does your sis go to wheaton or just live in teh chicago area? if so does she like it there? any insider info?

btw: fischer was the one i think, but only on the one particular floor...so i don't think there are any worries

also, to anyone already accepted, do you know what the grade requirements are to maintain acceptance? thanks!

By Daniela5586 (Daniela5586) on Monday, January 19, 2004 - 02:21 am: Edit

I haven't been accepted, and I don't know this for a fact (so don't quote me), but...

I'm assuming that your grades from Senior year should maintain your g.p.a...I don't think they will call you up and reject you if it drops a little. As long as you maintain A's and B's, maybe even like one C in an A.P. course, I wouldn't worry. Colleges just don't want to see a person completely slack off once they get in. They like to see someone is motivated, regardless of their college acceptance.

As for your grades once you get to Wheaton, the average g.p.a. for students in 2001 was 3.4. The average g.p.a. for freshman after their first years is 3.18.

Considering you were accepted to Wheaton, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about in relation to grades. It is a very good school, and not easy to get into. Besides, if God brings you to it, He'll bring you through it.

Just enjoy the...approximately 4 months we have left of high school.

Just finished the FAFSA, my efc is............$314, that's right $314. Kind of crazy. I overestimated my dad's income as 20,000, seems as though it's only 13,700.

wow

Except this makes me feel really bad for you =(.

By Ineedsleeep (Ineedsleeep) on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 06:17 pm: Edit

hey alpha, did you apply to wheaton or did you decide not to?

By Alphachimp (Alphachimp) on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 01:04 am: Edit

i can't. My high school limits us to 7 colleges, and Wheaton didn't even list an engineering program on their website. My mom still won't fund it, and I imagine my EFC is going to be high. Scholarships are tough because I go to an Elite HS and lots of people with higher grades than me. That means ROTC or tons of debt, both of which I doubt are feasible options.

I think I'm going to settle for Grove City instead. Still, my first choice is my dad's alma mater (sp?), Harvard. Then would be (in order of preference) Princeton, Grove City/Columbia, MIT, Colby, and the University of Michigan. I posted my stats on the Grove City discussion, and people's reaction was to ask me why I chose to apply. That didnt give me a very good impression of the school.

btw, loved ur post in the sleep section. that was hilarious.

hehehe the sleep thing is actually true believe it or not...i think that might be the best thing i've learned so far in ap psych: how to pull all-nighters and pull them well (if needed, i actually always get at least one sleep cycle lol)

By Daniela5586 (Daniela5586) on Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 10:22 pm: Edit

I just finished my FAFSA too...and based on my EFC, I won't get any money for college. It’s so ridiculous! Of the 3 schools I calculated, the most I could get is $3,000 to pay for a school that's like 10 times that amount. I don't know how I'm going to go to college...my parents aren't paying for anything, and aid is based on their income.

i don't understand! why did i get waitlisted, it's just not fair!!! Wheaton has always been my first choice, now, I'm gonna have to go to NYU instead. It was either Wheaton or NYU. Though I'm not sure exactly how the waitlist thing works, I guess I'm gonna have to go to NYU, afterall, I was accepted somewhere, always better than nowhere.

By Missyboo (Missyboo) on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 10:13 am: Edit

Hey everyone... yeah, I applied to Wheaton EA and got deferred to RD and THEN got waitlisted. I guess I don't understand... I mean, for starters my scores were really high... SAT: 760 v 600 m, 33 ACT, 3.8 GPA unweighted..... =( As far as I can tell there isn't much else that would screw me up.
Anyway, it looks like I'm going to UW-Madison. (that's where I'm from) I'm not giving up hope until i actually get rejected, but I guess the chances are slim by now.

For those of you who did get in, what are your stats?

By Jmom (Jmom) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 08:14 pm: Edit

Missyboo, I'm so sorry that you were waitlisted! I wanted to let you know that, from what I've learned, it is much more difficult for girls, especially in-state girls, to get into Wheaton. They love their "we have students from every state" reputation, and many more girls apply than boys, leading to a higher rejection rate for girls than boys. I think girls from the midwest in general are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to applying to this school.
Best wishes and I really, really hope they choose you off that waitlist!

By Whowasthursday (Whowasthursday) on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 06:57 pm: Edit

Hey, I'm a junior and I visited Wheaton and am going to apply. How was your guys' financial aid packages?
We're probably going to have an EFC of between 4,000 and 5,000.
Will the financial aid make it impossible?

By Rebeltide0024 (Rebeltide0024) on Sunday, April 18, 2004 - 12:48 am: Edit

I got 26,000 out of 29,000 the first year. Only 4,000 of it loans, and the loans are subsidized.

By Rebeltide0024 (Rebeltide0024) on Sunday, April 18, 2004 - 06:11 pm: Edit

My efc was $103 by the way.

By Justplayin104 (Justplayin104) on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 09:23 pm: Edit

Hey missyboo,

don't feel too bad, I'm going to UW-Madison too! I didn't look at Wheaton when I was doing my college search, but I wish I did. I'm not sure I would have gotten in though, because your stats are higher than mine, and you were waitlisted. Well, I think I'm going to try to get in for some summer classes. Hopefully they're not as lenient for that!

It def. looks like a school I would have seriously considered, so maybe things will work out. I'd love to check out the place.

By Chemgirl (Chemgirl) on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 09:59 pm: Edit

Tormima: Wheaton does not actually have an associated medical school, although it has an outstanding pre-medical department/program. Pre-meds from Wheaton have been accepted at prestigious med schools like Harvard, Tufts, all of the Universities of California, Chicago, ect...
The science program is also very strong, and the profs seem to be very excited about their fields of study and research. The science departments are also very small, so you get a good amount of individual attention. I'm pre-med and a biochem major, and I love Wheaton! : )

Going to be a senior (white male from PA) and was wondering what my chances are EA....
GPA - 3.6 weighted Toughest course load possible (upward trend since freshman year) not sure of exact ranking
SAT- 1300
I have a pretty impressive resume with many leadership roles in my school( Not necessary to list everything but I am president of many clubs student government ect...)
Outside work- volunteer at a school for at risk youth. Worked last summer as a Congressional Page in Washington D.C.
Help teach sunday school at my church
*** My friend is also looking at Wheaton with similar ecs as me and scored a 1260 on the SATs would taking it again really improve his chances that much if he could only raise it 50 or so points?

I think you have a pretty good chance. Just compose a good essay and you'll do just fine. As for your friend, I think he has a fair chance as well. I don't think 50 points will make a difference, but if you two want to qualify for the Presidential Scholarship, you both should retake the SATs (you need a 1400 as well as a 3.6 GPA). I'm applying to Wheaton for EA as well. These are my stats:

Female from NY
GPA: roughly 3.7 (UW) at a prestigious HS
ACT: 32
Strong ECs and faith
300+ hours of volunteer work

Best of luck with everything. I hope you get in!

I'm not sure about the rate, but I think you have a good chance. You shouldn't worry too much about it. NOTE: you should check out the National Christian College Fairs. It's stopping by Pittsburg on Sept. 18th. Take that opportunity to find out more about Wheaton as well as other Christian universities. I just got back from my visit/interview at Wheaton and was extremely impressed. The Beamer center was being dedicated when I was there and it was also homecoming weekend so it was a really exciting time to be on campus. Also, I had the chance to sit in on a comparative politics class (about 20 kids) which allowed me to get a good feel for the school as a whole. The class was discussing the UK's economic system and coincidentally there was a student from Britain who offered his opinion. I got the sense that this type of “coincidence” is not really all that rare at Wheaton which was another plus. I did get to spend some time in Chicago went to a Cubs game as well which was cool because I had never been to Wrigley before. All in all I loved Wheaton and I really hope I get in if that’s where God wants me. oh ya its true the food is good. The only negative was the distance . Any questions let me know
