I was wondering if a 1400+ and top 10% is good enough to be a serious candidate out of state. I noticed it had a 50+% acceptance rate, how much more selective is it for oos applicants?

That is definately good enough to get in. You will also get into honors with those stats.

It depends. If your SAT is 1410, and you are ranked exactly in the 90th %ile and have an unweighed GPA under 3.9, I would not say that you will "definitely" get in...but even then, you will have a very good chance, especially if you already applied. If you have not applied yet, you better hurry.
The difference between Michigan and other top 10-15 universities is that Michigan is very clear cut. For OOS students, I would say that...:
...if you are a 3.9-4.0 student (unweighed) with a 1450+ on the SAT and a top 5% ranking, you are 100% sure to get in, if you apply before November.
...if you are a 3.8-3.9 student (unweighed) with a 1350-1450 on the SAT and a top 10% but not top 5% class ranking, you have a 75% chance of getting, in you apply before November.
...if you are a 3.7-3.8 student (unweighed) with a 1250-1350 on the SAT and top 11%-25% class ranking, you have a 50/50 chance of getting in, if you apply before November.
...if you have a GPA under 3.7 (unweighed) with an SAT under 1250 and a class ranking out of the top 25%, you have virtually no chance of getting in.
As you can see, Michigan admissions is almost mechanical.
But don't let the 53% accepted fool you. Michigan is not a safety for most OOS students, unless, like I said, you have a 3.9-4.0 GPA, a 1450+ SAT score and a top 5% class ranking. The stats for OOS applicants to the college of LSA and Engineering are as follows:
~10,000 apply, ~4,000 (40%) are accepted, ~1,700 enroll.
Mid 50% SAT: 1260-1480 (mean 1370).
Mean GPA: 3.85 unweighed.
Graduated in the top 5% of their HS class: 75%
Graduated in the top 10% of their HS class: 95%
What drops Michigan's numbers significantly are the school of Nursing, Kinesiology, Natural Resource Management and Art and Design. Those 4 schools make up 15% of the student body, are separate entitites (they almost never take classes with LSA and Engineering students) for all intensive purposes and the mean SAT for those students is significantly lower.

You seem to emphasize the uw GPA. Is there something special about it? I have around a 3.5-3.6 uw gpa from grades 10 to 11. There are two main factors which contribute to the low gpa: a seven point scale and 5 APs junior year (chem, bio, stats, us hist, and english lang). Also would applying RD be any different than applying before Nov.?

Michigan does not look at weighed GPAs. Michigan looks at your grades, crosses out all your non-core-academic classes and your Freshman grades and gives out straight, unweighed GPA. They do give consideratyion for strength of curriculum. A 3.5 GPA is sort of low, but if you took many challenging classes and have a high class rank, you will be ok, especially with a 1400+ on your SAT. You are in good shape to be sure. But you are definitely not a shoe-in. Michigan is a reasonable match for you in that you probably have a better than 50% chance of getting in, but that's about it.
As for RD/ED, Michigan has neither. Michigan has RA! LOL Roling Admissions. Michigan works on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants who apply in August and September have the best chance of getting in. Those who apply in October have a slightly lower chance. Those who apply after October still have a chance, but it is not good. So, if you can, apply in the next 10 days or so.

I have a 33 ACT (1450+ SAT), top 3% rank, but a lower uw gpa of 3.5 (due to lots of honor/ap courses). What's my chance?

Tiff, you have a very good chance. Your GPA is obviously low, but your ACT is very good as is your class rank. Michigan is a match for you (safety if you are from Michigan). How did you do on your AP exams? Any 5s?

I got 3-5s (cal bc, english, psy) and 2-4s (euro & us hist). I think I will be a AP scholar w/ distinction accordig to the new rule. And, I'm out of state.

Still, if you apply before the end of the month, I would say you have a very good chance. 5s in Calc BC and English is impressive. You may even be considered for the Honors program. Michigan is not a safety for you, primarily because your SAT is not that high, but I would say you have a much better than 50/50 chance. Good luck to you.
