What kind of things would one write for the last two short answer questions about the note to a roommate and something that is intellectually interesting? I'm not quite sure what they are looking for...

In terms of the note to a roommate, I believe the example they read at the convocation was written in the style of some one actually speaking to their roommate. IMO it is possibly a chance to show a different writing style, to show some humor, and mostly it's an open opportunity for you to reveal some aspect of yourself that does not show up in any of the other questions.
In terms of the intellectually interesting question, show your passion for some topic or idea. Possibly research you have done or philosophical ideas you have pondered or a piece of literature that turned you on and got you thinking, etc. They are looking for people who can provide intellectual stimulation for the community.

Have fun with the roommate essay. Show the side of yourself that does not come through in other parts of your application.
