A lot of people (4-6) are applying to Stanford EA from my school (pretty competitive school in NY), do you think we'll all kill each other's chances because we are from the same school? Do you think Stanford would take this many in EA from the same school if all are pretty qualified?

Stanford took 9 kids from our local high school but I don't know if they were EA and several were legacies. On the other hand, I read somewhere that students apply to Stanford from over 5,000 different high schools, and since less than 2,500 are admitted, that averages out to less than 1 per school. Your CC should be able to tell you about your school's history for getting kids into Stanford.

p.s. I was told by one of the admissions reps from Stanford that you are not directly competing against the kids from your same school, you are competing against the hundreds of other highly qualifed candidates from other schools.

Here's my guess...Stanford wants a diverse freshman class, so they want tuba players and physicists and footballers and actors and...blah blah blah. So you'll probably be competing against the other kids who fit into your general category. If your big thing is the violin, you'll be competing with the OTHER kids whose big thing is the violin, because Stanford only needs so many violinists. So unless all the applicants from your school have the same major and extracurricular interests and..., I doubt it's going to be a huge deal.

How many people do you think fit the computer-whiz category? You think I'll have lots of competition?

I know Stanford took like 4-5 early from my school out of about 7 who applied. They usually end up taking about 5 a year or so, but the 4-5 early was a bit surprising. Now, on the other hand... this was basically the top of the class minus one or two people, so they knew they were getting some of the top students. So the fact that 4-6 are applying doesn't mean it will necessarily hurt you. HOWEVER they want students who have excelled in high school and/or have special/interesting talents. So assuming none of you are potential recruited athletes and that none of you have especially amazing artistic abilities or anything, class rank will help decide who gets in. If you have #1 and and then someone who is just barely top 10%, the #1 has a better chance. If you're towards the top of the applicant pool, then no worries, but if you're at the bottom, your chances are lower. Now, even without the top appplicants applying your chances are lower... I don't think the other applicants lower your chances that much. Unless you're at a feeder school... Hopefully this rambling was actually somewhat helpful.

My School is really competitive but no one has gotten in Stanford in the past 2 years so I guess this is not a good thing.

riceaholic - if you're a female, you're practically a shoe in, if you have strong stats! there are still very few females going into computer science. If not, I assume that stanford attracts a lot of applicants in this field due to their proximity and close relationship with the silicon valley companies.
