Hi
how strong is the poly-sci/international relations department at NU????

Poli. Sci. is decent, though not a top program nationally (ranked somewhere around 20-30). International Studies (not International Relations) is an inter-disciplinary program and combines Poli. Sci., history, and other fields to create a degree program. If you major in Int'l. Studies, you must also major in an additional field, as it is still considered an adjunct major--more significant than a minor, but not quite the kind of program that can count as an individual major yet.

Hey ZCat, how do you rate School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern? Is their Social Policy program better than Political Science?

I'm not completely sure about Social Policy. The Education program is highly regarded. Political Science is not one of our stronger departments, and I'm almost positive that Social Policy is a "better" program at NU.

Hmmm, thanks. I just wasn't sure whether to major in Social Policy or probably, if time allows, major in both programs. Both majors complement each other and could benefit me in the long run.

thanks zcat! another question... i heard that the history department at NU is good, is that accurate? Also if you are a student in the college is it possible to take classes at Medill??

By Zcat18 (Zcat18) on Tuesday, October 05, 2004 - 02:37 am: Edit

Yes, NU has a relatively strong history department. If you are in CAS, you can take certain general classes in Medill, but others are much harder to get into (only because they may be offered only once a year, and most spaces have to be reserved for journalism majors).

That's why I'm taking classes I know are only offered once a year NOW than wait til later. At least I can have electives later in my junior and senior years.
