one of my essays is about what my interests are, since i am an undecided applicant...

i said that my main interests were pediatrics and broadcasting, but at the parents forum, they said it would be better not to mention my journalism interest b/c umich doesn't offer that?

should i include it in my essay? or would it be a bad idea..

should i just say that i wanted a good liberal arts education so i can narrow my choices?

Journalism as a career and journalism as an academic field are not always related. You can be an English or History or Poli Scie major, work for the Michigan Daily and become a Journalist when you grow up! ;)

But I already responded to your essay post in the Parents forum. If you want to mention Journalism, make sure you make it clear that your interest in it is purely professional and that educationally, you desire a well roudned liberal arts education that is multidisciplinary. Know what I mean?

I think it's completely fine to mention your interest in a journalism career. Somebody has to write for the Michigan Daily! A friend of mine teaches in a journalism program - and his feeling is that journalism degrees are for graduate school. As an undergrad, you need to get the kind of broad-based education that will make it possible for you to write on a variety of topics. At Michigan, you can take writing classes, communication studies classes, and you can write for the Daily -- all of which will contribute to your career interests.
