I know two of U of M essays need to be 250 words. The third one have to be 500 words. I tend to write way more than I was suppose to. Would the university care? I hope not because I try to make my essays very interesting and I hate to cut it down. One of my essay that is suppose to 250 words is actually almost 400 words.

I would suggest that you try to live within the word count guidelines.

I had an admissions rep visit my school (I live right outside Detroit) and they said they aren't going to count words, so don't worry if there's too much or not enough. As long as you write well, and answer the question concisely, you should be fine.

I agree with Netshark, but be careful. That does not mean you can write a 500 word essay when you are asked for 250 words. It simply means that anything between 150 and 350 words is fine, so long as you are to the point, pertinent and effective.
For the 500 word essay, you can go up to 600 words. I would not go beyond that.
