I have mine soon...any advice or tips on what to expect?
By Neobez (Neobez) on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 10:49 am: Edit
Good question. I'm wondering the same. . .
My bro had a horrible interview 3 years ago, so bad he even withdrew his app.
It makes me really nervous about Georgetown specifically. I hope I don't have that same interviewer.
Can anyone speak on what to expect?

I have mine Tuesday, and I'm sooo scared!! Over the summer I interviewed at Holy Cross ( I ended up deciding not to apply there), and it was horrible. I had made a list of 5-10 questions to ask the admissions officer, but after that, she kept asking if i was sure i didnt have more questions, and it only lasted about 25 minutes. I didn't realize you were supposed to have so many questions prepared.

They are usually easy. Just be your self. Don't over dress, but don't be a slob either. Don't get nervous. Eat a banana. Rehearse few open ended questions like why you want to come, what is your favorite activity, where do you see your self in five years. Unless you are funny - stay away from humor. Stay away from politics and religion etc etc.

My interviewer is out of town, but she's incredibly flexible with the scheduling. She sure beats getting interviewed by a bunch of Army Colonels..

Definitely KNOW Georgetown- I talked to my interviewer on the phone just now and he wanted to "test the water," if you will...
I nailed the first two questions and then he pulls out, "What do you know of the Mission of Georgetown."
(long pause, massive internal profanity).
My interview is next Monday. Ah!
By Shortcakefairy (Shortcakefairy) on Monday, September 27, 2004 - 10:59 pm: Edit
they test you out on the phone call!!???
LoL anyway, thanks everyone for your advice =)!

My guy did...he probably just wanted to rattle my confidence

The mission of Georgetown is incredibly easy. It's even on the seal. The globe symbolizes dedication to the social sciences, and the cross represents the devotion to faith, and the intertwining of both would be the study of social sciences and the pursuit of government service intertwined with the faith.
:-D
You can tell I REALLY want to go there. :-P
I can also tell you why and how the Walsh SFS was founded, if you want.. :-D
College on the Potomac .. hehehe

Is all this on the website? Or should I just memorize the view book? LOL, just kidding...kind of.
So I actually have no idea what even goes on during an interview... what, in general, do they ask you? What should you bring to an interview?
By Hoya_Saxa01 (Hoya_Saxa01) on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 - 02:28 pm: Edit
The universal question is "What books have you read recently?" Other than that, my interviewer asked about the clubs I was involved in and questions of that nature. Very general and non-specific.

I was close..I said that it was founded as a Jesuit University and focused on education and practical learning...
I spend more time obsessing about other things then the collge's mission, I guess ;)
Calidan, talk to your interviewer when you set up your date.
I was told that we will not be discussing my credentials, seeing as the college has those. He asked for my GPA and SAT and said "Everyone applying has comparable scores" and that the interview would help "put a person to all that paper work"...and that it would be a conversation instead of a grilling.

I had mine yesterday, and I didn't get any trick questions. My interviewer just graduated this may, and I think I was her first interview. She really only asked me about my school, my activities, and why I'm interested in my major and stuff.
Make sure you have questions to ask too, and not ones that can be found in the viewbook or online.

ooh I'm scared....
actually, to the person that said not to be funny, why is that? One of my best traits is that I'm funny...will they not appreciate it at all?
By Shortcakefairy (Shortcakefairy) on Saturday, October 02, 2004 - 02:47 am: Edit
where did you guys have your interviews?
at your house? or another meeting place?
By Shortcakefairy (Shortcakefairy) on Saturday, October 02, 2004 - 07:04 pm: Edit
babybird, of course you should be funny--just not crude, keep the humor polite obviously.
it's important to be YOURSELF.
good luck.

OK, thanks...mine hasn't even been scheduled yet, I should probably send in the Part I, ha.
By Jangel86 (Jangel86) on Sunday, October 03, 2004 - 02:10 pm: Edit
Mine was at a coffee shop. I think having it at a place like that made it less stressful for me.

has anyone who's applying this year already had their interview?
By Manderz (Manderz) on Tuesday, October 05, 2004 - 12:40 am: Edit
Had mine today...I actually had a lot of fun..Georgetown alums are cool.
By Calidan (Calidan) on Tuesday, October 05, 2004 - 02:37 am: Edit
What'd you talk about? Any specific questions you remember?
By Fallentear04 (Fallentear04) on Tuesday, October 05, 2004 - 04:58 pm: Edit
current Georgetown students are even cooler ;)
By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, October 06, 2004 - 01:14 am: Edit
I don't know if it was a typical interview....but he started by asking about my family, then we talked about the courses I was taking and my extracurriculars...It led into us talking about Madeleine Albright's book and then ended up with an hour and fifteen minutes or so of political stuff, debate talk, Iraq, the world, etc...Then I asked him a few questions, and he told me about a course he took, and then, I was reading Clinton's book and he said similar things about the same course, so I thought that was cool!

Do you think that an interviewer would ask about political topics even if the student isn't applying to SFS?
By Alita (Alita) on Wednesday, October 06, 2004 - 10:11 pm: Edit
calidan-that should depend on the interviewer and the student. Clearly manderz and his interviewer both shared an interest in politics and international affairs. If you are interested in medicine or education or engineering, etc, that should come up. Go with whatever youre passionate about.
By Manderz (Manderz) on Wednesday, October 06, 2004 - 11:44 pm: Edit
Yes, I don't think I had a typical interview, it just so happened that we had both read the same book and it led into a hugggggggggee political discussion- which would probably not of happened had he not been on the same side of the political spectrum.
I agree, talk about what you're passionate about. Not only do you probably know most about that topic, but you will also talk more comfortably about it.
I'm also a potential candidate for an International Politics major, so my interviewer probably expected me to be semi-versed on the goings on.
My interviewer was really nice and put me at ease right away. It was definitely not as painful as I expected, and actually kind of fun in a way, to have an outside person kind of look at your life and say "Wow, that's really interesting."
By Tlaktan (Tlaktan) on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 01:47 am: Edit
Well, my interview is set for the 16th of this month. Wish me luck! (It's at a Border's bookstore, so the setting is definitely comfortable)

Do they set up interview for EA people first?
By Neobez (Neobez) on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 07:53 pm: Edit
Good luck tlaktan, I know how much you want to get into Georgetown.
By Manderz (Manderz) on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 01:58 am: Edit
Yes, because we have to interview by November 1.
By Babybird87 (Babybird87) on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 11:26 am: Edit
I submitted my Part I last Wednesday...when will they call me about an interview do you think? I'm applying EA.
I'm nervous that politics will come up and I won't be on the same spectrum as my interviewer. I don't want to argue with them, that would not be good! Should I just avoid that if it does come up? But in all my essays and everything, I mentioned my complete interest in politics...
By Manderz (Manderz) on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 03:56 pm: Edit
If you are interested in politics, by all means, discuss it with them.
And you'd be surprised, my interviewer was open, and had some really interesting insight and a lot of stuff I hadn't thought of before.
