by the way, was it bad to send in my app early, or does it actually help? and should i send in a resume or updated activities list when the deadline is closer?
thanks for all your help!

You have very good chances of getting in, especially since Rice admits half of its freshman class each year from Texas, many of whom are from Houston. As far as the app., it wasn't a bad idea as long as you made your essay as good as possible, as that's one of the few things that would normally keep someone from applying so early. Also, you should, in my opinion, send an updated resumé once the deadline is near, especially if you've won more awards or participated in new or different activities not listed before. I go to Rice now, and that's what I did.
Hope this helps.

btw, on my application i didnt put much emphasis on my community service hours, since they were all through clubs. will that bring me down, or will the adcom assume that my hours/week that i put for my clubs include comm service since they are sometimes required?

That's a good question actually. It shouldn't be too bad as long as you listed the activities themselves, if not the hours. Pretty much all of my comm. service was through clubs as well, but I think I may have actually listed some as separate, without the connection to a club. If you think you might could better represent your situation with an updated resume, you could include the community service stuff on there.
