I have a vague idea about how your HS GPA is calculated for UMICH, but not totally sure. Can someone explain it to me so I can figure out mine ??

edit: my grades for core classes plus Spanish for 10th and 11th are as follows unweighted...
88,95,90,90,97,96,96,91,92,93... if someone can tell me what mine would be Id really appreciate it, thanks

That's like a 3.7-3.8 GPA.

Here's what I was told at an info session...
1. Throw out all your non academics.
2. Unweight all your grades.
3. Give yourself a 4 for any A (A+, A-, A)
4. Give yourself a 3 for any B (B+, B_, B)
5. Give yourself a 2 for any C
etc.

use basic 4.0 scale system (A=4, A-=3.666, B+=3.333, etc.). Use grades ONLY from 10th/11th grade, and throw out any grades other than core classes and foreign language. This came straight from an admissions counselor.

what is a non academic? Would that be classes like gym and band?

By Boysmom (Boysmom) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 06:49 am: Edit

Non academic would be any class that isn't math, science, english, social studies or foreign language.

what about computer science, technical drawing?

By Boysmom (Boysmom) on Sunday, October 03, 2004 - 09:20 am: Edit

According to UMich, any class offered by those previously mentioned five departments are academic classes. If it's offered by the business department, fine arts, etc., it's a non academic subject. Might not be right, but that's what they use. So a computer class offered by the math department is academic, and a computer class offered by the business department is not.

Someone took a lot of honor/ap but got mostly Bs would have a lower UM GPA than someone took only regular and got As. How will this affect the chances for admissions?

By Boysmom (Boysmom) on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 03:33 pm: Edit

They would take that into account in the "strength of curriculum" section.
