I'm an incoming transfer student, and my major is English. Although I won't be able to give you firsthand advice, I do know that it's one of the most challenging programs, as well as one of the most prestigious in the country.
My friends who are currently juniors and seniors spend the bulk of their time reading for their classes. It is A LOT of reading. They seem to cope with it fine -- but then again, they're also super crazy smart.
It might be academic suicide to venture into such a major without knowing first that English is most definately your strong point. I hear 10 page essays are the norm, and professors don't think twice about giving you an F. And the students are super competative also.
Hope this helps a bit.
