does michigan give finaid to out-of-state students? need-based, not merit. how much of out-of-state students's needs do they generally meet? if income is less than 30,000 or 20,000 with 4 kids, would i still have to pay a lot?
if they arent good with finaid for non-michiganians, i'm not applying. someone help me out.

i am not as poor as you sound, but i got some aid. I got $15k/term. $3300 of that is federal loans, $1500 is work study, and the remaning $10k or so is grants and awards.
Essentially I am paying $6600 a year in loans (that will be paid off when I leave), and I have to work to earn that $3000/yr in work study. Each term costs $16,700 (this year) for out of staters, so on top of the work study that I need to do, I need to make about $1700 somehow through out the year. Essentially then I have to earn $4700 this year in order to pay for everything, and when I graduate I will have $6600/yr of loans.
Not exactly wonderful, I am still going to graduate in (hopefully less than) like 25k of debt, but considering the fact that a year of school sans aid costs $33k, it could be a whole hell of a lot worse.
I needed basically 100% of the aid, and they met me about 88% (if you include the workstudy and loans as aid--which they kind of aren't). Oh well.
you should apply to umich, this school seriously dominates.
if it matters, my high school stats were pretty good, 11 or 12 AP courses, 1430 sat, 32 act, 3.87 unweighted. if you CAN get in, I would apply, and then just see ho wmuch aid they offer you. Maybe you will be happy with it, maybe you won't. But you'll never know until you apply
go blue,
chris

hm. the UM website says:
out of state:
Fr/So year
tuition: $26,027
room and board: $7,030
books and supplies: $956
personal and misc. fees: $2,076
total: $36,089
yikes. anyway, on the financial aid website, it says they can't meet full demonstrated need for out-of-staters. that's sad. i guess it's off to find another school.
(note: i'd apply, but i get a max of 7 apps)
