i'm planning on doing the b-school BBA program. but, since u have to first apply to LSA, i've also put down psych. is this considered a double major? if i study psych the 1st 2 years and then biz the last two? how does it work exactly? the website is confusing. i'm workin on the short essay about academic interest and i've written about psych, but not business yet. waiting untill i know how it works! thanks much

Not sure you can double major if you're in b-school. You might talk about interest in psych classes. You have to complete at least 54 credits outside the b-school and meet all distribution requirements. That's at least 13 classes. Try this website for more info: http://www.bus.umich.edu/Academics/BbaProgram/DegreeRequirements.htm

so then i should write mostly about my interest in business for the essay right? but note that i choose psych as my interest for the 1st 2 yrs too. i guess i will minor in it

Just for you info...

You can definitely get a minor in psych in LS&A and your degree in the Business school. Not sure about Double Major though.

Assuming there is a reason why you want to combine these two disciplines, I'd write about that. Michigan is big into interdisciplinary studies. Look at President Coleman's address on the website - and check out all the interdepartmental offerings in the B-School. One reason - perhaps - not to focus exclusively on Business is that you aren't admitted to the B-School until you're a junior. So you need to have a back-up plan. And I don't mean this just for the essay. Only about half of Michigan students who apply to the BBA program get in. You'll need a 3.6 GPA (in college!) and evidence of community service and leadership (in college!). It's very competitive. Given this, it's probably smart to show that you've got multiple interests.

And a 3.6 at Michigan is not easy. I struggled to maintain a 3.4/3.5 GPA.

Is 3.6 a definite cut-off, or is that just what an applicant generally should have? I am really worried about attending UMich for business because of how good the b school is and then not getting in.

No, the cutoff is closer to 3.3 or 3.4, but most students who get in are in the 3.5-3.7 range.

so it's a good idea to write about both. split my essay half and half. cool thanks!
