I'm in a bit of visa problem here and I still haven't secured an F1 student visa yet. I'll try everything I can to get my visa in time and not miss the Orientation or the start of school. sigh!

Anyone know what options do I have if i'll be coming late? like defer this quarter, late registration, what?

hope everything will work out fine.

btw, don't forget me in my absence.

Well, I assume you've contacted the Stanford Bechtel International Centre (http://www.stanford.edu/dept/icenter/). If you haven't, you should do so immediately. I'm pretty sure they'll be able to help you out.

Would it be possible for you to enter the US on a standard tourist visa, and then try to sort out the visa issue once you're over here?

Dont think that works. Schools cant do anything. US consulates/embassies are especially strict about that when it comes to Asian countries such as China and Vietnam ( where I'm from). Two of my friends are in the same situation. (One will be a grad student at Stanford and it took him more then 2 months to sort out this whole visa mess. The other is from Grinnel and she's stuck in Viet for 1 sem :( sad huh). You need to ask the consulate officer what exactly they need in order to issue you a visa. that's the only hint I could give :(

I think you can miss up to 2 weeks of classes and still be fine. After that, they might be able to make an exception for you, but I don't think missing that much class out of 10 weeks is a good way to start college anyway. I'm sure you should have no problem starting in winter quarter if this visa problem takes a long time.
